Default Swirl Arm Link

Hi,

I picked up a new Swirl Arm link today (its the type with a socket at each end). 2008 - 2.4d

When I fit it does it need any grease/oil/WD40 putting on the socket or on the ball? or am I ok just giving the ball a wipe down and then fitting/clipping the link straight on?

I've seen that these seem to fail, but thought the first step is a new arm and see how it gets on.

Do I need to remove the air ducting prior to installation to enable access?

Thanks in advance.

Mine is secure at the motor end, but kept coming off at the swirl flap end. I removed the intake piping from the top of the engine (only two hose clamps) to get at the arm. I then drilled through the ball joint on the swirl flap, maybe 2/3 towards the outside edge. Must have been a 1.5mm-ish drill bit in the cordless drill. Next, took a file and made the swirl flap end of the arm about half its orignal thickness. Re-attached the arm and fitted a tiny split pin through the newly drilled hole in the ball. Still working like new after a few thousand miles. Or at least it was when I last checked! Very pleased.

I put the finger (small end piece) from a disposable nitrile glove over the ball and popped the arm back on, still there after 2k miles.
