another D5 or the new 2D 8sp
I am thinking about changing my 58 (102K) and am not sure which route to go, especially with all the Dieselgate stuff going on.
Do I pick up a 14-15 plate D5 and enjoy a better performanc to my own D5 or do I go for the newer more economical 2D 8sp unit. Driven the latter engine in a V60 (manual) which I did not like as it was manual but then also a 3 day run in a V90 auto and engine is really nice BUT the D5 is sooo nice. Pro's n cons please, I tend to keep my cars for 5-6-7years.

If you enjoy power, the 215 bhp D5 is everything you'd want. It pulls like an express train and, for a large furniture carrier, mine's an XC70, it handles well and surprises German car owners. . I'm sure the fuel consumption could be bettered but as this is my first diesel for over 30 years, I'm just impressed how far it goes on a tankful. Although since my previous cars for 15 years were all 3 litre V6 coupes, most cars' fuel consumption would impress me!

The diesel worries will, to begin with, probably mainly be focused on cars older than Euro 6 versions.
As a general rule, the new four cylinder (VEA) engines fulfill Euro 6 regulations. |

5pot D4 or D5,
Wouldn't touch the newer 4 pot VED engines unless you buy a decent warranty with it

V60 hybrid let's you have an eu6 5 pot diesel with great economy, silly performance and no road tax...That's kinda why i got one although i have the earlier EU5 engine, think 2015 onwards are euro 6 compliant tho
The new 2l engines are very quick mind, i just miss the character of the earlier engines, they are defiantly better though. The new 8 speed auto boxes are also an improvement over the 6 speed ones. Aa far as i can tell eu4 and lower will be affected by any proposed bans, so any twin turbo D5 should be ok... |

I will miss the power of my wife's xc70 estate when we're done with it. That five cylinder engine has so much of it and all through the Rev range. At 215 Bhp I worried it might be lethargic hauling the extra diff and the heavy body about bit it never feels like a big car off the line . Will take some beating to replace it.
