All good advice, when you say replace the wishbone do you mean the whole lower control arm or the bushes within it?

Do they corrode or warp?

Got it, just watching this https://youtu.be/DnwksNuAPaQ which shows it’s difficult to spot with the wheels/weight on the car and you’d have to press out the old bushes and press back in the new ones, so new part required

Also how many traders are there on Facebook, Autotrader and Gumtree. SO few genuine private sellers and even less who have a car known to them. A manual (I do want the auto) popped up yesterday and it was absolutely spot on with all matching tyres and from the description a caring owner. That didn’t hang about too long!

Smile Wishbones

Hi Ovlov,

The Lower control arm (= wishbone in a lot of peoples autospeak.. due to its shape) has rubber bushes in the front and rear joints (see pic attached of the more likely to be worn front bush) and also a pic of a new one to give you an idea of the difference from worn to new.. the rubber is there to reduce vibration coming from the wheel end, and also is under torsion (ie gets twisted back and forward as the wheel moves up and down over bumps etc).

The rubber usually fails on the original ones after 50-70k miles, the later bushes were apparently improved spec, so if a car your looking at has never had them changed then expect an MOT fail or some rather imprecise steering!

You used to be able to buy the bush on its own and press it in (needs specialist tool for) more recently volvo and oems tend to sell the whole control arm so making it much easier to swap out the old worn one.

You can see the front bush looking under the car from the front, and if you use a pry bar or similar you can get an idea of how easily the central pin in the bush moves, best done with car in resting (unjacked up) position.

Default Update and more questions

Bit of thread housekeeping..

So I picked up my Volvo v70 05 (facelifted?) d5 Euro 3 163 last week.

So far Im very happy. Will be servicing and probably sorting out belts as although not enough miles on them it’s nearly ten years since done.

Steering wheel wobbles a little at speed and pretty sure I noticed that through the brake pedal last night so perhaps not the wheel balance I’m hoping for. Warped discs? Inside of front tyres wearing which from what I’ve read is a combo of tyre pressure, loading of car, worn bushes, tracking and lord knows what else. Mechanic I’m taking it to says chamber adjustment not possible but there exists severql comments on this forum that there is 1~2mm play in the wishbones when they get tightened up? Might have that wrong. Also an offset bush could be fitted but maybe only to the rear.

If anyone knows anyone who is a whizz in setting up a v70 then please let me know. Would be a pain to fit new shoes to have them wear again.

Mechanic found a fault with climate control, damper motor not communicating with something? Net result is Auto button doesn’t work and climate needs to be adjusted manually. I might try to gently run a vacuum past the grille of the cabin sensor as I think I see fluff. Will be having the head unit out soon as have a Grom Bluetooth to fit, will see if it needs cleaning and try to do so without busting the wire. Might the DICE etc be able to recalibrate the CCS?

What a lovely warble the engine makes!

Spoke too soon. Actually now I think about it when I drove it back last week it had Engine Service Required, being that I’ve only ever driven cars that can’t talk to you I just thought, fancy and hmm seems a bit early for a service.

Kick down didn’t work on the way back, then I think it did. Since then kick down no problem up to 4.5k.

Just after posting the above on the way home I booted off from the lights and the triangle (of doom) appeared along with Engine Service Required and not wanting to go much past 2.5~3k revs.

How did the mechanic that looked it over and test drove it not find that, I found it easily.

Left it for a while in the supermarket car park and now it revs full range. Modern cars!

Mine did that and it was a clogged fuel filter, only seemed to happen when there was a high demand for fuel, i.e at full throttle.

Thanks for the reply, I had a panic after a read of forum searches and there was no end of misery for one owner, one of the potential faults for him would make my car a complete right off. Fuel filter did come up as one of the simple fixes on another search, and maybe that tallies with the big boot I gave it off the lights. It was a long day and we seldom see open straight roads in London (your honour)

Fuel filter swap I can run to, be nice to pin point the issue though.
