Default Oil leaks

So today didn't go quite as I expected.

Car booked in for the exhaust manifold recall. Phonecall from dealer mid-morning to say there is a significant oil leak - certainly the cam carrier seal and possibly also the crank seal. And the Volvo extended warranty doesn't cover oil leaks... Dealer in discussion with Volvo who have initially offered to cover 50% of one and 70% of the other. These discussions are continuing! For both seals to fail suggests to me a common cause, and certainly a pre-existing fault.

Anyone else experienced similar leaks?

Many thanks Zebster - apologies for not finding that thread first. Crankcase pressurisation could be a common cause for both seals to have failed. And might give me more leverage with the warranty people...

Might be worth trying the 'glove test' mentioned in that other thread?

Definitely. Car is currently at Dealer (and probably in pieces by now). Will certainly try the glove when I get it back (if they haven't already found a cause).

All seems sorted. Volvo agreed to pay 95% of the cost (approx £1300) - seems as if the Upper Timing Cover Seal is a known problem with an associated TJ. The Crankshaft Front Seal seems to have been coincidental - but the good thing is that they had to replace the timing belt as part of the job. Quite happy to have that done for about £60... Even better, someone in a car park recently 'remodelled' the offside corner of my front bumper - it needed dismantling so I could get behind it and 'pop it out'. As they had to go through the OS wheel arch to do the crank seal, they popped it out for me without my asking.

So well done to Dave at Waylands Reading for sorting it all.
