I would also fit a new gasket as its pretty cheap and be prepared to find the intake hose at the throttle body end the plastic may be broken / brittle

I wasn't clear.
Do the cleaning in two steps.
Clean what you can reach with the throttle plate closed then open it with your accelerator pedal and clean behind it as best you can. Do this without moving the throttle plate manually.
And yes, I read your initial post with reflexion and care. Forgive my horrid authorship.

I have a 2001 petrol (non-turbo) auto which had the hunting problem when I bought it 5 years ago at 136k miles. My independent specialist traced fault to Magnetti Marelli and replaced it (like for like), taking it to Volvo to be re-programmed. I've now just rolled over 187k miles...and it's doing the same again. can anyone point me to the "Sacer method" please? The thread search locates people talking about it, but not the method. Maybe time for a Sticky? I would really like to replace Magnetti with something else, if possible.

Polo on. The MM system has two throttle position sensors[I think that's what they're called]one on each side of the throttle body,of these you replace just one-I bought mine from e-bay and it came with a sheet of instructions. You have to remove the throttle body from the car, which [unless this was done when your original TB was replaced]means removing/moving slightly the starter motor to get the electrical plug past it.Once done and refitted there is no need for any re-programming as you're using the throttle body which is already programmed to the car.

May I throw in 2 more cents?

If the "repair kits" were mentioned a while back on other threads on other websites so I looked them up.

I never saw emptier, all but absent of information product descriptions in my life. Then they disappeared from ebay.

That's not to say these kits don't exist anymore. If you do buy one, have at it. I also remember reading that some grinding within the housing was required.

I mean, what the heck, it's only a mylar strip which wears and should be repairable/replaceable, so have at it.

Were I in your shoes I'd ship my troublesome ETM to XeMODeX or some other automotive electronics repairer and have it repaired. I believe the repair uses "non-touching" hardware. The price was always quoted around USD500.
No reprogramming is needed as they use your ETM.
