Replace dash illumination bulbs on '03 V70
I have an '03 Volvo V70 D5 SE and one of the bulbs that illuminates the instrument panel on the dashboard has gone out and needs replacing.
I reckon I can do this myself and have been searching the 'net for guidance. So far, I have found:- swedespeed forum thread entitled 'Instrument Cluster' :- http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?79942 YouTube video on 'How to remove Volvo V70/XC70 instrument cluster' :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZjlzcfzjPs These resources are very helpful and encouraging, but I'd like further advice before I take the plunge. Can anyone please answer any of the following questions? :- 1. How easy is to to remove and replace the blubs when the instrument panel has been removed? 2. How can I tell which bulbs I need in advance? (I only want to replace like for like. I don't want any fancy LEDs) 3. Should I consider replacing all the bulbs at once to ensure a consistent lifespan and brightness? 4. Are there any gotchas I should worry about? Thanks in advance. Update:-
According to Volvo, the instrument panel on my car requires 13 bulbs of 3 different types :- 4 x 1.2w 989800 - £1.75 each 5 x 3w 9472109 - £3.18 each 4 x 2w 9472110 - £3.18 each There's no way I'm going to replace the lot, so I need to identify the one (or ones) I need. The Spares guys at TMS Coventry and FRF Swansea have been brilliant, but here's the rub; their schematics and diagrams do not show which bulb goes where and they usually have to order them specially from Volvo! So tomorrow, me and Oliver at TMS Coventry are going to fix the illumination on my instrument panel by pulling bulbs one by one to see which one is which, and which one(s) need replacing. Oliver has been very supportive and helpful and is looking forward to labelling his diagram with each bulb part number. |

Update:-
I did a dry-run of the dash removal this afternoon to familiarise myself with the process. Not too difficult if I’m honest. I took a photo of the back of the instrument panel. The bulb holders are colour coded blue, black and grey:- I'll discover which bulb is which tomorrow... |

Conclusion.
I needed two bulbs in the end; one black and one grey. Total cost £6.36. Here's what I discovered Blue = 1.2w capless bulb Volvo part no. 989800Thanks to Oliver at TMS Coventry for being so helpful and supportive. Last edited by BritishBlue; Nov 25th, 2011 at 13:05. |

Thank you, thank you again.
A great concise post, providing all the info necessary. The cost involved in this is not the bulbs themselves, but the hours spent searching the internet with only scant info to go on. Peter |

I quite like the idea of making my dash blue, that would simply look awesome!

Ref earlier posts which were really helpful, I did a bit of additional cross referencing the front panel display and the rear view photo above and can confirm that:
Blue = 1.2w capless bulb Volvo part no. 989800 is for the back lighting of the 2 warning lights multi displays and the turn signal arrows - 4 off Black = 3w bulb with holder, Volvo part no. 9472109 is for the display illumination of the 4 dials (speedo, revs, temp and fuel) - 5 off Grey = 2w bulb with holder, Volvo part no. 9472110 is for the back lighting of the odometer display, the clock/temperature display and the multi-function computer display - 4 off My main dealer didn't know which were which and suggested I dismantle the panel and bring in the blown bulb !!! - the info given here avoids this.
