Inspired by this, I went to do mine. Missing one of the rear screws, that should have raised concerns. Got the cover off, no filter inside!
So, the question is, with ECC, does the new filter fit in the front slot or the rear slot?

It'll be obvious because they only fit one way.

This is from Jim in Dallas, TX:
The optional system can be identified (at least in US models) by the appearance of the recirculate button. If the recirc button has only one LED, then it can only be switched on to full recirculate, or off to give 100% outside air. If the recirc button has a second LED light and the word 'auto' on the button or next to it, then the system can be set to automatically change from outside air to recirc, if a sensor detects pollution.

This optional IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) system which requires the thicker filter element having charcoal. The thicker element goes in the frontmost of the two slots. Only one filter is to be put in--not both at the same time.

Take note of the odd (truncated) side. Install the new one accordingly.

I'm not sure if mine has iaqs fitted, it does have an auto on the recirculation button so maybe it does?
I still won't be paying mega bucks for a carbon filter unless I suddenly start suffering from acute hay fever!

I've got an iaqs sensor - I know because it's faulty!

Collecting the filter tomorrow (Volvo also asked if it was a/c or ECC so hopefully I'll get the right filter). But without the old one to reference I've got to hope it really only does fit one way!

The worker at my Volvo dealer's parts counter will sometimes print out for me a diagram or installation instructions for parts I buy from them.

In the case of the cabin air filter I saw how the originals were installed. The cut-off corner fits at the top and to the outside in my LHD vehicles, which is to the right in mine and so would presumably be to the left (nearside) in your RHD version.

Do you want a new IAQS sensor? I have a brand new one which I ordered for mine but it is the wrong part (mine is 2001 so is large but the newer one is tiny) it is easy to fit, just undo the windscreen wipers and remove the plastic rivets holding the cover in place, the inlet to the ECM is on the passenger side and the IAQS simply unclips and pulls off the wiring harness. Its your for £15.

GeorgeandKira has got one detail wrong about the ECC IAQS system. This does need the thicker filter which is activated charcol but it goes in the slot nearest the firewall, the front slot is for the thinner filter. The thick filter is something like 1.5 inches a full 0.5 inch thicker it has two sections in the side pieces of the frame which are cut so as to allow it to bend and thus be fed into the rear most slot. In the UK they can be hard to source and many aftermarket sources offer parts for LHD cars which are wrong as they are asymetric and the filter itself is directional. I have found PFS car parts stock the correct ones see
https://www.partsforvolvosonline.com...tion=1&x=0&y=0
their prices are good compared to Volvo but they charge a bit for delivery.

"frontmost" and "nearer the firewall" are the same thing!

I've taken a gamble and got one coming on a slow boat from china, but will let you know if it doesn't work out. Mines a 2003 model
