Are you giving it back? How much did he put down (if you don't mind me asking?)

My bet is loan declined too, some people are just dreamers.

I'm not sure I could keep someone's deposit in this way, I'm just too nice and couldn't relax knowing I'd dug my heals in and kept the money.

Sometimes being fair works best all-round especially when you don't really know who you're dealing with.

I usually would as well for something that didn't take me much time but Mark said he rushed around to meet him and spent 2 hours with him plus 30+ emails....That's not a quick 10 minute look over the car + 10 minute test drive, that's some serious time wasting there.

Fingers crossed whatever you decide to do with the deposit that it doesn't happen again, it can be a real pain selling cars

I've bought and sold loads of cars privately but not for the last 10 years now and I've become acutely aware of how awkward buyers can be nowadays, this is one of the reasons for the rise in popularity of the online car buying companies.

As much as I despise time wasters, it's probably worth just giving the deposit back. There are a lot of mentally unstable people out there who come across as quite normal. It's just not worth the risk in my opinion.

I don't like the concept of deposits with a private sale because of the hassle it creates when something goes wrong.

Indeed, I don't like strangers coming to my house, whatever the reason.

My home is my sanctuary.

Im against the grain here, a deposit is a deposit and a guarantee of your commitment. If you bail thats your problem not the sellers (Everyone knows this)

I paid a big deposit on some car parts last year and the buyer was very loyal, held it for me and I gave him a deposit to show that I am committed.

After being messed around by the famous Tim Williams, I ended up having to drop those parts and I never even bothered asking for the deposit back. Didnt even question it.
