Default Cheap S40 under £1500 ?

Looking for a cheapish runaround , only do about 4k miles a year.

Is a cheap petrol s40 under 1500 viable as a cheap reliable used car ?

if so which engine should I look at

cheers

No experience of the Petrols but I'm lead to believe you would be better off avoiding the 1.6 in favour of something else. There's a few on eBay at the moment but several diesels make up the total. The 1.9 diesel is economical but perhaps not ideal if you're only doing short journeys.

There's a 1.8i in Wakefield on there at the minute for £695 that looks decent enough.

If it has been well looked after, yes. Having had a 2lt petrol V40 for 17 years and covered 370000mls in it I replaced it with my current V40. That cost me £800 5 years ago , bought with 90000mls and full Volvo service history. Still ging strong with no issues. The 2lt is the one to go for, avoid the gdi.

Yes, and whilst there is nothing wrong with them if given a good thrashing once in while, given the op's low mileage best avoided as a diesel is.

smallzoo, are you sure you're talking about the pre '04 model since you're going to find a large selection of models for sub £1.5k and that price will also include the post '04 ones too?

If you're looking for the newer model then you'd do best to repost on that forum (but stick around here if you're in the right place).

FWIW my last 3 Volvos S40, V40, V40 cost less than £1500 in total and were perfectly good cars (current one still going strong).

Thanks a lot.. I was actually looking at the 04 onwards ( Maybe I shouldn't be ! )

Anyway..should I move the post or just post again in the different forum in case I see either model year pre or post 2004 ?

Very, very different cars pre and post 2004.

Pre 2004 are Mitsubishi based and good solid dependable uncomplicated cars. Post 2004 are a Ford Focus in a party frock. My son had a 2004 V50 T5 and whilst it was a good drive the electrics were always playing up and giving him grief. I wouldn't recommend an early one at a knock down price. No where near usual Volvo quality.
