I usually aim for the recommended tyre pressures but will often intentionally over-inflate by anything up to 2psi. My reasoning is as follows.

I often go several weeks between checking pressures. During this time the tyres slowly lose pressure. If I only ever fill them to the correct pressures they will spend most of their time under-inflated and wear on the edges. By sometimes over-inflating them wear will be more even and they will also spend more time closer to the recommended pressures as they lose air.

I am also very bad at remembering to increase the pressures when I use the car fully loaded.

I vaguely recall Volvo advising over-inflating the tyres by a few PSI in cold winter weather but I may have imagined that one!

You should increase the pressures if fully loaded or intending to do some extended high speed driving - in other words using it on the motorway daily or a one off trip. According to my handbook i'm fairly sure (without checking) that it's 4psi all round increase so that would make the fronts 32psi and the backs 34psi, based on the recommended 28F/30R setting from Volvo.

However i've always found this makes the tyre "sit heavy" on the road on all the 7xx i've had so routinely run 30F/32R for normal use. Long, fast journeys, i increase by 4psi so 34F/36R. The tyres seemed to wear heavily on the edges on the standard 28/30 setting but have always been about right on the 30/32 with sharper handling (slightly bumpier ride but nothing to speak of) so have always used these figures instead.

The cold weather thing may be to counteract the temperature dropping the pressure in the tyres, they're already on the low side on Volvos figures but when you consider that in general, SWeden is much cooler than here, those pressures are probably perfect for their roads so the £millions spent by Volvo deciding the pressures is probably spot-on for Sweden.
Being slightly warmer, at least through winter, here i'd say it makes sense to have the tyres a little higher for normal use as that extra grip is doing nothing except wearing the tyres quickly.

If you are having issues with front shoulder tyre wear then you should carry out the camber mod, came from Volvo to solve the issue

I run 30psi all round had no tyre problems as yet the car is 21 years old and the tyres are 7 years old.
