Default Auto gear selector knob removal

Hi everyone I am having trouble selecting gears or really more just getting it to come out of park, it is a 2006 xc90 auto diesel and it seems that the release catch under the knob is the problem once it is out of park I can select Drive or Reverse or even tiptronic without problem but it really is a problem I am forcing it out can someone tell me how I remove the knob itself because I cannot see how to remove it, and it feels like I will break something before long, many thanks Chris

I just did this job last week, so you are in luck!

1. Prise up the trim around the gear selector.
2. Release the gearstick boot from the stick (it is a ring with tabs - get a small screwdriver up inside to release it)
3. Pull the knob off (it is tight and will come off suddenly). If you don't release the boot, you will also pull the selector indicator panel up with it, strain the wires underneath and possibly ruin the interlock solenoid - ask me how I know.
4. Disassemble the mechanism in the knob (push out the hinge pin first). You will find the selector pin inside has broken away from its housing. Repair with epoxy and re-assemble.

You can also remove the trim from the bottom of the boot by releasing the 4 tabs underneath and either pulling the boot up or the trim down.
