People here do not realise what goes on in modern lubrication systems , things have moved on greatly since the 940 and pre 2000 cars . Engines now have piston cooling jets , 2 x Variable valve timing pulleys and variable volume oil pumps and oil pressure , they have superchargers and turbochargers which require certain oil characteristics all controlled by the ECU. All this is designed to work properly with 0W/20 oil not 5W/30 or anything else , the system knows oil temperature and ambient temperature and coolant temperature, rpm , throttle load etc and adapts these crucial milli-second timings of the above devices to suit the viscosity of the oil .... OIL is the only thing not known by the ECU in all these very fine calculations so you are going to throw it all out the window by tampering thinking you know best.. As said above Volvo know what they are doing more than anyone else here and work with Castrol engineers on developing new engines . you benefit by using the Oil they choose ...

Hi having been a Uk Volvo Master Tec around 10 year ago. The oil that went into all volvos be it D5, T6 etc was Castrol Magnatec 5W30 With an ACEA of A1. Then castrol altered it to A5/B5 when Ford took over Volvo which suited Fords.
I think its all mumbo jumbo and under the counter handshakes between Castrol and Motor Manufacturers. As for Castrol Magnatec and Edge. Castrol promoted magnatec as sticking to engine parts over night helping cold start conditions which sounds fab. Then they made Edge and Magnatec took a back seat, However the Edge oil is more exspensive haha. Make your own mind up guys !!! In my opinion as far as Volvos are concerned if you live in somewhere thats cold most of the time 0w30 in Magnatec or Edge is better than 5W30, but for the UK and countries with similar temp types 5W30 is good enough, with an ACEA rating of A1 Or A5/B5. Especialy if most oils are changed annualy as i expect most older volvos are. |

Not getting at you yourself here, just in general. Magnatec was pushed hard from release, but it wasnt superceded by edge, edge superceded slx in name only as it was still the same range. Magnatec is quality std use oil and slx/edge is premium performance use. A1/B1 spec was superceded by A5/B5 and both are specs predominantly used by ford. When ford took over volvo the A3/B4 specs were replaced by A5/B5 where possible since ford have an obsession with tiny economy and emissions improvements over engine protection. Ford in the 90's were woeful for fuel economy and I believe this is why the switch to the then 10w30 (now 0w30 or 5w30) low hths A1/B1 spec (now A5/B5). Even in main dealers, cost cutting and old fashioned knowledge/folklore/pub science can and often does get in the way of up to date and actual genuine knowledge. |

Hahaha, well back to the original question way back , i think 16 pages ago. Which was can i use 5w30 magnatec A5/B5 in a D5 having done 90,000 or so miles. My advise is yes there will be no problem unless your taking the car to Antartica or somewhere similar.
As for all the oil technical details, i,ll leave that to the specialists... 😉 |

If its a euro 4 D5 you can yes.
If its euro 3 you should use A3/B4. As for oil technical stuff, the specialists recommend 0w30 (euro 4) (0w40 euro 3) 😉 Last edited by AndyV7o; Apr 4th, 2021 at 01:46. |

I have seen the eBay Shop Volvo dealers selling Volvo Branded oil. The price seems very reasonable. Is this now what Volvo workshops use, or is Castrol Edge still recommended?

With my Dyslexia I attempted to read 16 pages, but
Last year I filled with 5w-30 Edge Oil. I drive a 2004 XC90 with a mere 173k on the clock. I guess I’m right in thinking 5w-30 is an ok oil for my age of XC90 in the British Climate. Going by the graph I could even go for 5w-40 as long as its complying with the Grade. Last edited by tomkirkland; May 20th, 2021 at 01:09. |
