Could some of the confusion over DPF fitment come from a difference between when some manufacturers fitted them and when they became compulsory[similar to the fitment of catalytic converters on petrol cars]? Just a general sort of question I don't know whether this was the case or not.

In simple terms there is a huge difference between when various manufacturers decided to introduce them and when they became mandatory by law. Many manufacturers were fitting them several years before they became mandatory but an example here is that in 2008 I bought an April 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 Diesel ( Mercedes ). It did not have a DPF. In 2010 I bought a March 2006 Volvo S60 D5 E4 and it had a DPF. From that it can easily be seen that it was not mandatory at that time and two different manufacturers from exactly the same period in 2006 took different paths re fitting DPFs.

I always use branded and Shell Vpower and Vpower diesel.
Shell Vpower diesel definitely returns an extra 5mpg in like for like driving on a 2013 Astra CDTI in which I did 90,000 miles and 7mpg on a 2010 Merc E350 covering 85,000 miles. The performance petrol stuff I have genuinely responds better to Shell Vpower. BP Super in comparison feels just like any normal lower octane fuel. As I keep all my vehicles with no intention to sell and they get 'driven', I just put in what they seem to run better on. Despite this, the main difference being in the additives different companies request, on the rare occasion I'm getting low and need fuel, I'd not hesitate to use supermarket fuel.

It's only just occurred to me how odd the question is, translated into an Australian context ... the supermarkets are ONLY branded, one big chain is Shell & the other Caltex (and the two other larger chains, IGA & ALDI, don't do fuel).

And in France unless you live in a large town or city your only source will be a supermarket for fuel.

Why does this thread keep popping up as one of the 'Unread Posts'?
(Could it be triggered by voting in the poll even if no message added?)

Yes, it's whenever a vote is cast, as well as a comment being posted.

So I’ve been running 99 octane for the last 9 months or so since I’ve had the car with a T8 engine.
My last car was a proper performance car and you could tell straight away with the performance and engine if you weren’t using 97-99 Ron Anyway. Last weekend I had to put 95 Ron in the Volvo when I was in a rush. And frankly, I can’t feel any difference in performance and the engine certainly sounds and feels the same. I don’t measure mpg so not considering that. I am genuinely wondering whether I should even bother with the higher Ron with these new Volvo engines and whether they are tuned to be able to use the extra Ron in any meaningful way...
