Power Steering Issue
Hi all
A bit of guidance if anyone has past experience? PAS was very poor on idle- I drained/siphoned the old fluid off which was gopping. Refilled with the correct green fluid and bled it through and its better but not fixed. Looked at the PAS pump with a view to replace it- how the F are you supposed to get to it?? Its a 2010 D5 205bhp and i can't see how you get anything down to the left of the engine. Is this one that you attempt through the offside wheel well? In other news I fixed the other issues with connectivity, sorted the mirror etc. Any tips graciously accepted! Cheers Stuart |

I have a Haynes manual which says, “ All models except later XC60 models feature standard power steering with a belt driven pump. Later XC60 models feature an electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) pump”.
One is removed from the top, the other as you rightly say with front offside wheel removed. If you know which pump you have, maybe I can help. |

Her goes, word for word.
1. Pull up and remove engine cover. 2.remove the auxiliary drive belt (s). 3.on XC models remove the air deflector from below the bumper and then remove the AC compressor mounting bolts. Support the compressor and move it to one side. 4.Have a clean container ready and then remove the supply and pressure pipes from the side of the pump. Be prepared for fluid leakage and seal the openings of the pipes to prevent contamination. 5. Undo the bolt securing the pipe mounting bracket to the side of the pump. 6. Working through the pump pulley, undo the 3 bolts and withdraw the pump from the engine bay. Refitting, is a reversal of removal. Top up and bleed system. |

I've looked there just isn't room from above in mine- can't see clearance between the engine, aux kit/alternator etc and the bulkhead I'll have a look in the wheel well, if its more obvious from there I will give it a go, otherwise I will be scraping the cr4p out of my arms! Appreciate you taking time to do that Stuart |

Bleeding, if new components have been fitted or air has been allowed to enter pump.
1. Top up reservoir. Chock rear wheels, jack up front and insert axle stands. 2. Turn the steering wheel repeatedly from full lock to full lock, top up fluid level if necessary. 3. Lower car to ground, start engine and allow to idle. 4 Turn the steering wheel slowly to the full right lock, and hold for two seconds. Now turn wheel to full left lock slowly, and hold for two seconds. 5. Top up fluid level. 6. Repeat 4 above repeatedly and top up as necessary. 7. On completion, stop engine, recheck level, replace cap. |

With EHPS
7. Jack up and support the front of the vehicle. Remove the right hand road wheel. 8. Remove the right hand wing liner and the bumper cover. 9. Have a. Lean container ready and then remove the return pipe and pressure pipe from the side of the pump. Be prepared for fluid leakage and seal openings of the pipe to prevent contamination. 10. Disconnect the wiring plug and then remove the 4 mounting bolts. Refitting is a reversal of removal. (a) use new O-ring seals where fitted. Top up and bleed. If a new EHPS pump has been fitted then have a volvo dealer or suitably equipped garage install the necessary pump calibration software IIRC, this is why front fog lamps where discontinued on some XC60, because the steering pump didn’t allow the fog lamp to fit onto bumper. Help- not sure
Evening- still trying to figure out if I can sort this pump myself
As photo- the PAS pump you can see- is it a standard hydraulic one OR is it the electro/hydro one? My confusion is in the belt routing and the routing guidelines shown in Haynes- it LOOKS to me like its a hydro pump BUT the routing (alternator is above PAS pump) suggests its an electric? Plus as far as I can see the PAS pump has two pulleys on it? Anyone? |
