But, in that case, wouldn't there be other, more obvious, external damage as well, 'Forrest'?

I'm sorry, Martin, I was unaware that C.P. Motors had recently closed, as it is some time since I had used them last. As 'Moomoo' commented, that is a shame; I had always found them to be very helpful.

Regards, John.

I think it would be easier for you to buy your parts on the continent, as Brexit has made things much more difficult to do it the official way. Within the EU everything can be sent everywhere without custom hassle.
France might be difficult, but here in The Netherlands there are still plenty of places where you can get parts, new or used (Estateservices, Nordicar, Elferink etc). Estateservices for example will charge you only 20 euro for shipment to France. BTW, a half shaft is called a "steekas" in Dutch.

My thanks to all for the help and information.

In the end Steve Quinn (formerly "Volvo Vince" on Ebay) came up with a half shaft of the right length and it was delivered here in France the day after sending (At a significant shipping cost I have to say)

About 13 years ago I skidded on packed snow and hit a curb sideways. It wrecked the right rear wheel and bent the Panhard rod. I am pretty sure that was when the half-shaft would have been bent.

The garage fitted the half shaft to the car but, sad to say, that did not resolve the problem of severe vibration on braking. But at least the car now has both half shafts in good condition.

My thanks to all once more.
Martin

It is possible that there is a connection, Martin, but in that case why did it take 13 years and however many thousands of miles for the vibration to make itself known, and why did replacing the bent half-shaft not eliminate it?

I can't offer a solution, I'm afraid, but I would be inclined to probe a little deeper. For instance, have you had the car on a rolling road, where you could observe it's performance under braking from other than in the driver's seat? Have you had the alignment checked after replacing the half-shaft? I'm sure that you will get to the bottom of this!

Regards, John.
