Thanks for the clarification John, i can't quite see the attraction in that shade myself but each to their own.

As for 850s being immensely more valuable in that colour, what's to stop an "entrepreneur" buying a spray kit and repainting a "cheaper colour" and then selling it as a valuable one?
If someone particularly wanted that colour would they really mind if it started life as a blue, green, red, black or some other colour but was now Gul Yellow?

PS - While i was trying to find out what "Gul" was, i noticed in some countries (Australia for one) they called it "Faded Yellow" as well.

Thanks Mark - i have to confess so did i a few times as a young adult out on the lash!

If i ever have an 850, i know the colour i want, just not the name of it, it's a sort of dark teal blue, a bit like copper sulphate solution in colour. Daresay i'll find the name of it one day....

Apparently, the precise shade was arrived at because Volvo expected to sell a lot in the US / Australia where harsh sunlight would have faded a brighter, more conventional yellow — they thought it they faded it beforehand, it would be less of a problem. "Gul" is Swedish for yellow, and the precise shade name is Cream Yellow, apparently.

On prices, it's worth noting a 50K RS2 went through Collecting Cars last night for £80K — though they were never in the basement price-wise (like say E30 M3s, which could be bought for £5K many years back), this is a significant hike over values of a few years back. And, it's an estate.

Hard to pin a value on a colour in monetary terms, but Gul is the only T-5R-exclusive colour — you could buy a cooking T5 in either green or black. And it was the colour used in all the launch photography, so is a signature colour for the model.

Yes, in Australia it was called Faded Yellow. The story goes that Volvo were uncertain how stable the colour would be in the Australian climate so hedged their bets by calling it faded. I have no idea if that is true or not.

Well, the entrepreneur would have a hard time getting away with it as a quick check of the paint code on the build plate would give it away! Plus, the VIN number can be checked with a Volvo dealer who will tell you what the build spec was from a simple database check. Not only that but a full, factory standard respray would cost around £3500 to 4000 if you took it to a bodyshop which kind of defeats the object of the issue

As for colour preferences, well we are all each to their own - and a good thing too. How boring the world would be if we all liked the same thing. Some people love olive green - doesn't do a thing for me. Same goes with red 850's. In my eye, red doesn't work well on the 850's lines but others love it - it's really just individual preference. I think the Gul has become the sought after colour just because it's outrageous - a statement.

Regards
John

Plus, solid bold colours are in vogue — think of all the bright hued Porsche GT cars, Lambos and even RS Clios in French Racing blue.

There's something wonderfully anachronistic about a boxy Volvo estate in a sports car colour (Porsche did a version of cream yellow for the 996 / Gen 1 Boxsters), same is true for the red 850Rs to a lesser extent.

One odd thing about the yellow Volvo is that you never really escape the colour — it's visible in the door jams and across the bonnet when you're driving it, in a way the darker, more sombre shades aren't.

It's also very easy to find in a supermarket car park

£80K for an RS2?? Now I'm dead certain that T-5R's will go to £20K! lol

Default I have noticed v70r going steadily increasing

I have noticed v70r going steadily increasing going up in value especially if they are in good condition you can get a piece of S*** for a couple of grand but decent ones are a lot more expensive I think that this is a good thing as we know these are not the cheapest cars to maintain or run and I please

Also because I own one lol

I think the V70 as a range is about to get it’s day come. It does seem in all guises and excellent value vehicle!
