My 1979 Fiesta was Ziebarted. Not a spot of rust on it.

Default Ziebart - details

Ziebart was supposed to be non-hardening and in my experience was fairly much so. However it was not always properly applied - on my Morris Minor Estate that was my great love (+60, carbs, cam, Cosmics, 175/70/13s, etc) they failed to do inside the chassis members!

I had a 1975 Mk2 Escort Ghia that had been "Ziebarted" from new. Anyway one year I broke a rear leaf spring and replaced it with one from breakers yard, my car was 16 years old at the time. When I took the spring off my mk2 the front pivot bolt was buried under the ziebart. It came off and honestly looked like new, I was amazed!

But if it wasn't supposed to harden, why do I remember chiselling the stuff off the top of the bolt to undo it?

Maybe thats why it went out of business? Also after an accident you had to remove it and re-apply otherwise it would lift off the panels and moisture would get between and rot the panel anyway...

Thats why Waxoyl is so good... it doesn't harden and my Cavalier convertible really appreciates that! Don't expect the V70 will need this for a few years yet!

I had a 1976 Renault 5 treated, and it lasted 25 years without rust and only went to the breakers when the engine failed.

On the hardening issue, it was not a once only treatment. It's supposed to be retreated every so often. Although I used to use Waxoyl to keep it soft. It sort of evaporates.

It is Canadian I belive, developed for the military. Just run a search on the internet as it's still in use. It'll give some idea of what it's composed of.

Dinitrol is the best according to the Classic Car mag who tested a group of treatments. I think Volvo use it on their cars. There are only a few rust treatment places around now. Maybe due to zinc plating and factory rustproofing?

Volvos are no longer galvanised, haven't been for years...

And the worst rust killer is perforation. No amount of galvanising or rust proofing will stop that. And thats what will kill most newer Volvos - post 700 series.
Shame they started using multi sheet metal in their cars....

My 2003 XC90 has some coating that appears to be zinc under the paint, it doesn't rust whatever it is and it behaves just like zinc? Some parts underneath the car rely on it alone for protection.

Not sure what you mean by perforation. Isn't that the result of rust? Or do you mean the metal particulates from industry that fall onto the car and rust?
