Default Fuel Gauge

Hi

For those that know, my 740GLE went into the garage this morning for them to investigate why my fuel gauge still isnt working.

They have just rang me back and said the gauge would cost £70+VAT and fitting £60+VAT

I told him to leave it as i wasnt willing to pay all that money just for the dam fuel gauge.

Now hes confirmed its the gauge in the dash and nothing to do with the sender etc, now easy would it be to obtain a working gauge off ebay and fit it myself? As the car only cost £100 im certainly not willing to spend £200+ on what is rather a non urgent fix. I'd just like the gauge to work.

Thanks for any advice

It's held in with a small nut and its electrical connection, which is all very nice

Make sure that you get the right type for your dash though...

I was looking at this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-740-2ltr...QQcmdZViewItem

its from a 1990 2.0 740 and mine is a 1989 740 2.3

will this fit? and how easy is it to get the dash out my 740?

Cheers

It looks to be the same as the one in my car, which is also a 1990 2 litre model

To remove the instrument panel, remove the screws at the bottom corners (Covered with blanking plugs), and pull the whole panel towards you. Then, once you have enough space between the panel and the dash, reach behind it and unplug the wiring connections, making a note of where they go. All you need to do then is lift the whole thing clear, allowing you to work on it. Sounds complicated, but it isn't. Good luck!

Cool, i'll have a bash myself when i have a replacement gauge. I think ive already been ripped off, i figured as its going into the garage to have the fuel gauge done, i'd get the place to fit the new back lights for the passenger side, thinking they would only charge me £10 or so to fit since i supplied the light cluster, but ive been charged £60+vat for the hours labour!

An expensive lesson learned i think - Do it yourself
