V70: Air Hose

Hi all,

This is a very simple question really.

Could someone please confirm for me that the diameter of the air hose (that connects the air inlet(?) to the air filter) is 75mm.

Hi Olly.

Is that for your 1998 VOLVO V70 10V 2435cc PETROL ?
If I recall, that hose doesn't have simple round ends. (One end is a bend, and the other end is flattened).

I am curious- - why do you need to know - did you lose yours - or are you contemplating something interesting?

If you have lost yours, can you just go to a breakers and get one (or measure one)?

Yes, its for the 1998 V70. There is a flexible hose connecting the air intake "pipe" and the "pipe" that connects to the air filter, held in place at both ends with v large jubilee clips. But this hose has several splits in it, so I presume hot air from the engine is getting through to the air filter rather than just the cold surrounding air. I've tried to measure the diameter of the hose through the splits and make it 75mm, and just really need someone to say yes, that's right.

There are no "donor" vehicles near me so I was looking to buy a hose from eBay.

OK I'll try to take and put up a photo of my hose.
It is not quite like that one in the photo. The two ends have different internal diameters (68mm and 74mm). You could remove your split hose and measure the external diameters of what it needs to connect to.
It is a special Volvo part, so you should get one from a breaker (or someone on this forum).
It shouldn't be expensive.

If it has splits, then unfiltered air from the engine compartment will go into the engine intake, which is not good in the long term, but you could patch the outside with duct tape.

Sounds like a previous owner fitted the hose instead of getting a proper Volvo part...

Hi Olly,
Re the splits in the pipe - If you are having trouble sourcing a replacement pipe, there are other alternatives which I used with reasonable success on my 850 when that hose split - for a temporary repair remove one end of the pipe and slide/strap the wrist to palm part of a rubber glove over the damaged area, then clamp or tape the hose back into place - the repair will last quite sometime, but use thicker gloves like a "marigold" type as the thinner latex or similar surgical gloves don't withstand the oil and heat. (That repair lasted 3 or 4 months)

For a better longer lasting result I used 70mm black or aluminium air ducting pipe/hose which you can buy online - there's enough flex in the hose to allow it to stretch over the wider opening (74mm end) by twisting/unscrewing the coil wrap slightly, the narrower opening (68mm end) crushes easily to form the air seal. That oil and heatproof repair was still on the 850 several years later when I sold it.

NB I bought the pipe fro eBay but you might be able to find a local ducting firm who could supply the short piece you need rather than having to buy a couple of metres from an in-line supplier.

Here is a photo showing 4 pipes in the engine compartment for a 1998 V70 non turbo:

Top pipe is the snorkel that runs from the radiator shroud to the ecu housing

Bottom stub sits in the crash panel across the front of the engine compartment and picks up fresh air

Middle left pipe leads from the intake stub to the air box

Middle right concertina pipe runs from the air box to the intake manifold.

There is another pipe (not shown in this photo) which picks up warm air from the exhaust downpipe and goes to the air filter housing (via a vacuum controlled valve).
