Hi again fellas,
I've been on ebay looking at fault code readers - I did have a look at the map that you bunch have created of users with diagnostics stuff, but I figure it's probably best to pick up something of my own rather than maybe asking to borrow a reader (with whatever deposit etc someone requires)... if I don't borrow one I'm sure to buy the car straight away, if I do borrow a reader then guaranteed I'll end up not buying something and I'll feel like a twit asking to borrow again.. Soooo, that in mind, ebay... I have one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-B-MA...-/111671897022 You link it up to a program on your laptop, plug it in and off you go. Any hints on a volvo equivalent? I've seen all in one readers on ebay but I don't know whats what, I don't mind if there is something that may just give a list of codes and I can separately use my phone/google to look them up on site (if possible)... Found a nice looking xc90, low ish mileage FSH, timing belt changed. BUT only 1 month MOT left.... which makes me a tad worried.. Just to add, whilst it's only got 1 month left, it's MOT history is fairly good, a fail for a couple of bushes and naff tyres a few years ago, latest MOT advisories are couple of tyres needing attention (which after 11 months, may have already been addressed), brake discs pitted.. Judging by internet that's not overly costly (if not already done) and a ball joint dust cover damaged... so 11 months ago, nothing really unpleasant (other than cost of 2 tyres)... but 6k miles later, I guess other bits could crop up.. Offer to pay full price if they put 12 months MOT on it. If the car is genuine then that's a tiny amount for them to pay in the scheme of things.
If they won't put it in for MOT then you may wonder what they know...

Odds on the parking brake for one is not going to pass!
There could be an intermittent fault that the owner is aware of that will fail the MOT if error code triggered before or during the test; as DavidSmith1307 says, get them to do it so at least if you buy and the fault appears you have a whole year to sort it out - if buying from a dealer you can get them to fix if a fault should appear within a short time after purchase but if private sale much more difficult so make sure the price is way below similar from a dealer to cover your risk. |

All sound advice.
Out of interest what year, mileage and model/spec is the car and how much is it up for? I searched for about 3 months recently until I found one that was right for me in late February this year and am very aware that the prices can vary considerably and there is some very poorly described Tat for sale out there.

As others have said, insist they MOT it (and fix any issues), or no sale. |

Borrow a VIDA. Before I bought mine, I was kindly lent it for a couple of weeks. No money exchanged. All built on trust, from this forum. VIDA is whats best (other than spending 000s on a snap on equivalent) to read, educate, test, adjust and reset these cars. |

It already sold before I could get in there... Or at least it's no longer around, I have the reg saved on an app on my phone, so I'll check it's MOT status sometime. Thanks for the advice - back to the drawing board again..

Seemed like not a bad deal on face value (minus 1 month MOT)... |

How expensive does this sound?
I know bushes in some cars aren't cheap, not sure about XC's |

Looks like they are referring to surface rust, not bushes. I'd ignore all of that until it becomes a fail. Test drive it, if any knocks or pulling to one side under hard braking it will need bushes (and potentially other bits), otherwise OK. Last edited by aland; May 11th, 2018 at 16:03. |
