Default 700/900 series Diesel engines?

Hello, im guessing this has been covered many times on here, but im new so im gonna ask all the same!

Are diesel engines for 700/900 series any good?

A guy in the local Volvo garage told me they were problematic, and i am currently looking for a new motor for the missus and diesel economy is rather appealing!

thanks guys, great forum!

Complete piece of junk Volkswagen unit. Personally offered one as a gift I'd impolitely decline. They're stupidly unreliable, laughably thirsty and ridiculously under powered; and those are the qualities I like about them.

Seriously if you're looking for a diesel at that sort of money and age buy a Mercedes C250 (not an early CDI) or pretty much anything other than a 7 or 9 series diesel.

Those mid 90s W202 C classes tend not to be too bad on rot, the W210 E classes are crazy. But I agree that it is an issue. If it wasn't for the rot I'd have a W210 rather than the 940.

JUNK to use that word to describe the 700 /900 diesel . coud stir up a hornets nest here . i have driven my 940 1995 tdi 130000 miles trouble free . and its just run in at 180000 miles . if you are a little bit handy with the spanners these cars can be kept away from garages . mine only goes in for the cambelt change . you will find a lot of the forum users are the same . volvo stuck with this vw unit for a very long time for . reliability. and longivity.
sure like all cars including mercs there are always issues . just see how many bidders flock on ebay if you ever see a 900 with less than 1500000 miles and service histroy . there aint many left in that range so you best go and get your merc . as the good 900 diesels are in safe hands

I bought my first 760 diesel last year after always wanting one (sad I know lol) It had 260,000 on it, she always started first time hot or cold, and towed my 20ft caravan no probs. I have never worked out the mpg but it was better than the 740se 2.0 petrol manual I swapped it for.

So when I had the chance of another 760 with only 160,000 on it I snapped it up. It uses no oil or water and runs like a champ. The only thing I would replace it with would be a 850 TDI

You will find good and bad in all cars, and the end of the day make up your own mind, pay your money and take a chance.

Good luck with what every you chose.
