C30 cold start smoke issue
Hi, I am new to this forum and I hope I am posting in the correct section.
I have an issue with my wife’s C30 D2. It has started to produce white smoke on start up when left overnight or all day when at work. When the smoke is produced it runs quite lumpy for about 5 to 10 seconds. The smoke also smells quite sooty. Once the smoke stops it runs absolutely fine and drives well. There is no hesitation and does not feel down on power and I have never had any warning lights on the dashboard. I have took it to my local main dealer and they could not find any current fault codes (just an old 1 for the maf sensor). They have done a software update on the Ecu and adapted the injectors(?). This has made no difference. They say the D2 is not very smooth (true but not as bad as when it is smoking). They also said that diesels normally produce smoke when they start and they all do that ( not true. My 100,000 mile Saab diesel has never had this issues like this). Not sure what to do now as I have no idea what it could possibly be. Sorry for the essay. Hope someone might be able to shed some light and point me in the right direction. |

You don't mention the year but my first check would be to measure each glow plug's resistance.
Light smoke can be unburnt fuel in a cold cylinder which then clears as the cylinder warms up and fully combusts the fuel. With colder weather, glow plugs are meant to alleviate that, amongst other things so if even one is defective.....

Thanks, I will check them this afternoon. It is a 2010 facelift model with 58,000 miles on the clock.

I have checked the glow plugs resistance. Each has a value of between 0.03 and 0.05 ohms.

I found that a bottle full of redex diesel injector cleaner/treatment (or similar) every 5000 miles cleaned my nasty old Renault's diesel up a treat. Quieter, easier starting and less smoke, in fact everything it said on the tin (bottle).
