Introducing my 1967 P1800S

It took a lot to find the right car for me and sadly it meant I had to end my 13 year journey with my blue Amazon 4-dr, but I'm delighted with it.

There are a few jobs here and there:
  • The rev counter is crazy,
  • The speedo is crazy - I've done a little search on this here forum and I will be looking at the l-shaped speedo drive thingamer down there,
  • One of my least favourite jobs and one that I've had to do on each Amazon I've owned; the horn wire has broken inside the steering shaft,
  • I'm in the process of tuning the engine to run as sweetly as a nut, but it runs on
  • The exhaust sometimes bangs on the bottom of the car.

I sorted the brakes out good and proper with the correct procedure of adjusting the rears and a flush through of new fluid: it was nearly changing lanes on the motorway and the old fluid that came out was black. The NSF caliper was almost not working, so proof that regular new brake fluid is a must.

Default Welcome to P1800 ownership

Hi,

Like you my 63 P1800s has some "quirks" the rev counter doesn't work at all, need to get around to repairing it, my speedo is erratic but I think it is the cable that needs lubrication and recently I had to fix a banging exhaust, which I discovered wasn't the exhaust but one of the rubber suspension mounts for the propshaft, an easy enough repair once you disconnect he prop. The symptoms were that the clunk sounded like it came from the passenger side of the car when driving and from the drivers side of the car when a passenger..... because the prop mounting is central. The clunk was less obvious under drive but really noticeable on when in overrun. I've also had to replace the similar suspension rubbers at the tail pipe which also caused a knocking sound. When I did the first break derive, like you the fluid was black and the rear pistons seized.

I also had an over-reading rev counter and successfully adjusted it after studying one of Ron's excellent articles.
I've contributed to a previous thread on speedos so you may have seen it, but I removed the L shaped drive and it seems to work OK without it.
And I currently have an exhaust that bangs on the underside and it turns out the rubber circular bush in the rearmost exhaust support (just rear of the silencer) has disappeared. Worth a check if you haven't already done so.

To Swedishandgeramn; Nice looking photo of your 1800S. Is it black? Hope you really enjoy this model.
In my view it it one of the very most beautiful sports coupes of its era. In fact I think it has better lines than the Aston Martin DB4/5/6. One needs perhaps to consider versus the various limited production Ferrari and Maserati cars of the 60's. Yes the Jaguar E type is beautiful but if one is unkind possible a bit common/too popular at the time as it was significantly cheaper.......

Looks really nice Adam and i love the colour😄!!
Moerk Green wasnt a common colour and its a nice contrast with the tan interior.
Do you have electronic ignition? This may be the reason and i had to have mine worked on by John Osgood(??) who can be found on the web. Careful routing of the cable and assembly of angle drive normally sorts out the speedo issues. However i normally drive with the phone on a mph app(speeeometer).
Brakes can be an issue and I've had my fair share. I was going to convert to the rear disc set up but I've read with interest Rob Henchos view of the conversion.
I had a exhaust system fitted to the car and at the same time increased the size. Its a consumable so i dont see too much of an issue moving away from originality. At the expense of better breathing and better routing.
Enjoy the car, i use it year round and will be down to see friends in Brixham the weekend after next.

Thanks for that Russ. I'm going to get underneath to look at that speedo cable and drive like you say there.

I've sorted the brakes now good and proper. Do I recall you had difficulties setting the rear shoes. Let me know if I can help there when you're down here in Devon. Let's meet up anyway!

Actually, this car is black. It was rebuilt many years ago and was grey. Other than the colour change there are no modifications at all, just how I like them. Oh no, there are air horns which will be going!

Would have been a greater pic - the first one - if you had been able to avoid that hulk to the right maybe next time. A lovely car you have there.

Without a shadow of a doubt the best 1800 colour is the black with red interior. Nice
In my opinion

Russ,
Can I ask where to see Rob Henchoz's view on the rear disc conversion?
