Default Creepy ?

Is it normal to have the car creep (have to hold it on the brake) when R or D is engaged ? BW 55.
Had a W124 200TE (sadly missed) auto and it would hold even on an incline (up or down) in D until the accelerator was depressed.

Hi,

In general all automatics should have a bit of creep, normally the bigger the engine (more torque) the more noticeable the effect of creep.

Semi-automatics such as my much missed 1995 Fiat Panda Selecta had a CVT unit that would only engage when the accelerator was pressed so no creep at all.

But all my Volvo's have creeped it is a fairly fundamental attribute to the automatic transmission, the engine spins, the torque converter multiplies the output from the engine causing the vehicle to move.

Normally an automatic that didn't creep would have either too low an idle speed or perhaps a leaky seal in the torque converter but you would have noticed a loss of performance with that as well.

As above. The BW55 in the Royal Barge (my 1980 244) creeps a bit in D or R, they all do. If you have a carburettor engine you may also notice the engines drop a little when you put it into gear.
