Default poorley 740 won't rev 3000+

Hi to everyone new kid on the block.I've got an '89 740 GL estate 2.0ltr inj; B200e, 132k+ on the clock that refuses to rev any higher than 3000 rpm! any suggestions?. I have to date changed the rotor arm, the dist' cap & the ht leads, checked the timing to the timing marks & with a timing light( the marks say its spot on but the light says its out!!!! [used pot #1 wrong pot?]), run with the air box disconnected from the induction manifold, dropped the exhuast system & run it "open" ( great sound),removed the distributor, and checked for leaks in all the pipe work without any luck.If I very gently depress the acc; peddle it revs all the round to 5000 rpm, floor the peddle & it only revs to 3000. It does this parked up & when being driven.Last year my trusty 740 was treated to a new head gasket & a quick head skim, timing belt ect & its been fine up till now, so before I start looking at pumps & things (lead set ect £96 !) has anyone got any ideas as to what might be the cause?.

Hi there,
sounds to me like an ecu fault,
I once had this problem on a 99 Astra TD, it used to stop revving at 3k rpm and it had an engine management system light on, im not sure if 740's have ems warning lights, does it have any of its warning lights illuminated?

A B200E does not have electronic injection and does not have any electornic engine management, so ECU fault is not possible. I really have no idea what it could be but have you inspected the throttle body and wiring?

i had a very similar problem with my 340. the problem turned out to be the carb was leaking air, which was stopping the vacume from working well enough, which as a result was confusing the renix (i think). make sure the carb is all tight, and the breather hoses are clean and connected properly and free from holes.

by the way the symptoms match exactly. it might also have been a problem with the float on the carb, not allowing enough fuel in. does the rev 'limit' drop when you have your foot right down compared to when, say, half down? i'd reccomend getting a carb off a scrappy and fitting that

Ah, yes, but of course the B200E does not have a carb either. It has mechanical fuel injection.

is the timing done by an electronic thing, or is it entirely mechanical?

Hi,
I believe they have a rev limiter on the distributor, maybe this has become distorted or damaged?
