I have difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd gear on mt 2 ltr turbo estate with overdrive. It will engage but you have to give it a good shove. My wife is moaning about it, so has anybody any knowledge of this problem before I have to put an hammer to it!!!!!

Is the clutch disengaging enough? That will cause difficult engagement. If it goes into gear OK with the engine switched off then that is the most likely cause.

might be the gate is a little worn so it is allowing you to push the stick a tiny bit towards reverse, without the reverse collar up

Clutch seems to work fine when its moving, if I pull up at a junction or if its stood and the engine switched off then I have problems.

Maybe simple adjustment of the reverse gear selector plate will fix this
