Default Recommended code reader for XC90 2008?

Hi there, I bought a cheap and cheerful obd2 code scanner for my 2008 XC90 however it doesn't seem to be compatible. Could anyone recommend a code reader that will work and doesn't break the bank :-) Thanks, Luke

Depending on your definition of "breaking the bank", you are probably best off contacting Cheshire5 on this forum.

I would second that as well.

Like the others, I'd recommend VIDA as it's Volvo's own tool and works brilliantly.
I see the iCarsoft i906 mentioned frequently. Although I have no experience of it personally, it looks like a good, compact unit. Others may be able to provide some real-world feedback about it.

I have an iCarsoft i906 along with Vida. The iCarsoft doesn't cover everything that Vida does although it will give a good indication of any problems along with the capability of clearing DTCs. It doesn't do DPF or window reset and it can't be used to switch various parts off or on like Vida can do, although it will give live readouts on certain modules and components. The main advantage of iCarsoft is you can keep it in the glovebox so it's always there should you need it when out and about.

Below are the faults my iCarsoft pulled up when I bought my XC90

Thanks. Swirl actualator control is the issue I am having at the moment. Appears the Swirl Link Arm plastic connector is worn and keeps falling off. Have ordered a new one. Was that the same fault as yours? Thanks Luke

Unlikely a new arm will work, the ball end at the cylinder head side wears and the arm falls off. There are a few hacks on the internet that can sometimes work but the proper fix is to fit a new swirl flap assembly.

What diagnostics did you go for?

I have just ordered a iCarsoft i906, like the idea of having it in the glove box! Did you have a new swirl flap assembly fitted to yours? Costly? I recently bought the car so will be covered under warranty.

Unfortunately not, the dealer I bought the XC90 from sent it to a local Volvo independent who did a repair without changing the flaps. I suspect I will have to change the whole assembly at some point in the future but it's been fine the last 9 months so I'll leave it for now
