Yaw rate sensor is part of the ABS and the transmission won't get the full data input and be able to make full calculations on appropriate amount of drive to each wheel. I don't know the full effect of that but if your yaw sensor is missing that's a good place to start. Then clear the fault codes and see what comes back. Yes, no splined sleeve on the T6

Hi, first post and thought id share my AWD experiences!
Bought an 05 D5 back in August with 125000 on the clock at a good price, having checked and fully aware of a free spinning propshaft ( thanks to the fantastic advice here). Wasn't too worried about the lack of rear drive, but it's starting to niggle and with the temperatures starting to drop I thought I'd get it sorted. Best case - spline sleeve, worst case - transfer box. Good news...Sleeve came off quite easily apparently, but not-so-good news, the splines were non-existent. Worst news - the splines on the gear shaft were not much better. Probably 50% gone or more. I guess the car has most likely been running for a good few 10000s for both sets of splines to be buggered. I had factored this in when I bought the car, just was hoping it wasn't going to be this bad! As long as the rear shocks don't need replacing any time soon (like my brothers did!!) we should be fine. So took the plunge and a new transfer box ordered. Great forum and also stripped and repaired the rear wiper based on knowledge here. Hope to contribute more regularly too! Dom |

Better to change the sleeve before it fails. Failing that, as soon as the lack of drive to the rear wheels is noticed. From observations on the forum I'd say 50,000 on an original sleeve and 100,000 on the new replacement sleeve kit. This only applies to pre chassis update 163 bhp models. All 185 bhp engine models have modified chassis and uprated components.

Got the car back today! A transformed beast and the missus is very happy with the refreshed handling. No longer feels like you're dragging it round corners.
Expensive @ £1300 but definitely worth while. |

I'm new to the VOC although I have had a bullet proof S80 D5 previously with no hassle. I am looking at buying a 06 plate XC90 D5 probably with 110,000 plus miles. I spoke to the previous Volvo specialist we had used who said the mileage isn't an issue but there was an upgrade to the awd system on the 06 models which solved common issues. Is this info legit?
Also anything else I should look for when purchasing these things? I know you've heard it a million times on here but I can't believe there is no warning light to indicate an awd problem on them. I have just sold my X5 (thank god) and was, and I stress was comparing the Nissan pathfinder to the Xc90. I think I'm happy to start looking at XC90's but am not a fan of second hand car salesmen and hidden disasters that could be lurking so any advice would be great. Like I've said I think I can stretch to an 06 model. Anything to check for? |
