I spoke to the previous Volvo specialist we had used who said the mileage isn't an issue but there was an upgrade to the awd system on the 06 models which solved common issues. Is this info legit?

Also anything else I should look for when purchasing these things? I know you've heard it a million times on here but I can't believe there is no warning light to indicate an awd problem on them. I have just sold my X5 (thank god) and was, and I stress was comparing the Nissan pathfinder to the Xc90. I think I'm happy to start looking at XC90's but am not a fan of second hand car salesmen and hidden disasters that could be lurking so any advice would be great. Like I've said I think I can stretch to an 06 model. Anything to check for?
Hello.

In answer to the OP and poll, yes, I have had a problem.
Perhaps more usefully for your query - if it's still one you have - yes, you can have a fault without any warning displayed.

I bought a late 2006 (reg mid December) D5 XC90 2nd hand from - I should stress - a very fair indy dealer.
Before buying, he had it put in the local main dealer's diagnostic computer.
The DTC report (Diagnostic Trouble Code - also called OBD Onboard Diagnostic) showed a number of items.

Some of these were clearly non-faults or "ghost codes".
e.g. CEM-8F2E "Windshield wipers Signal too low" when they are observably working fiine.

One code however was relevant to AWD:
"DEM-0007 Hydraulic Pressure Faulty Valve."
The status of this pre-purchase was "DTC is found not active"

As I later discovered, this means the onboard system has recorded receiving a fault - but the fault is not currently active. (i.e. it's working OK now but we've seen a fault)

7 days later when I checked my new purchase into the main dealer for a separate issue (the previous owner had slightly over-zealously topped-up the oil before handing it over and that DID trigger a dashboard alert!) the status had changed...

"DEM-0007 Hydraulic Pressure Faulty Valve. DTC is found active"
(i.e. there is a live fault)

As described in a few posts above, this fault indicated an electronic control unit problem for the AWD - and its presence means you will have 2WD and not 4WD.

In my case, it turned out the fix at the main dealer for a replacement pressure sensor only and new oil in the rear diff was £138.36.

End result, working 4WD. Which mated with a set of Continental Winter Contacts did the business in the Alps this year. Drove up the mountain roads in a blizzard, 3 inches of snow and round the resort without any drama at all. And I am a nervous, non-experience snow/ice driver.

But agree, the absence of any dashboard warning for the absence of 4WD is a baffling bit of design.

Hence, on my "to buy" list is one of these...

And not just for the XC90 - but I've learnt from this and another recent experience buying a VW that on all modern cars, knowing the DTC status has become an essential pre-purchase check.

And I'll be continuing to check into the main dealer for servicing so any faults can be detected/rectified.

Whilst that ELM reader should pick up engine related codes, albeit in a "generic style" it WON'T talk to the other ECU's in the car, and there are a LOT of them. The only real way to diagnose these cars properly on a DIY basis, is with a Vida/DICE clone (usully from China) and these DO work VERY well, allowing you not only diagnose, but also check activations and reset/change parameters with in the ECU's on the car, in fact, pretty much the only thing the clones can't do, is software updates to the car, as you need to have a subscription and be connected to Volvo's intranet.

I've got one and it's worth it's weight in gold..

The sleeve on ours has gone (some time ago at least 10k). I have had an odd issue with the hadlex unit which caused the car to vibrate horribly (a bit like rumble strips) this was accompanied by a horrible metal sound from the front. I put this down to the worn sleeve catching in the angle gear. We drive down to the south of France yesterday and about 100 miles in to France it started to do the juddering again so I unplugged the hadlex which stopped it. It was only as we were pulling into the house that I noticed what can only be discribed as a bell like sound coming from under the car at the front. I have now had a look and it would appear that the output shaft of the angle drive has suffered a collapsed bearing and this may have been the problem all along. Nothing I can do here other than leave the hadlex unplugged to stop it turning.
On a brighter note up until I hit traffic we had managed 42 mpg at an average speed of 66mph so not bad. Even with the traffic and the diversion over some mountains we did 800 miles to a tank and a half.

Just a quick one regarding my 2005 2.5T. A week ago had angle gear sleeve changed plus some seals. Seals numbers are 2x 30735126 and 8636194. Luckily no issues with bearing however I am thinking of changing haldex filter( I guess is called like this) soon enough!

On the link you can see how badly sleeve teeth were worn!

Angle was leaking as well! New oil put in, too.

Everything cost me 240 pounds! However work was done in Warsaw, Poland!

I have - disabled because of DEM pump failure issues. See this thread in case this helps anyone else.

I thought the 2.5T had chain drive instead of the splined sleeve? Am I confusing models?

just checked earlier posts and it definitely says the T5 has chain drive and no splined sleeve? Is the 2.5T a different model?

Had a look online and I think the 2.5T is a different engine and gearbox to the T5.

As far as I can find only the T6 has the chain drive. The 2.5t has the same set up as the D5 163bhp engine.

Yes, I've probably just got confused with Volvo's model naming. (Yet again!) There is a T5 and a T6. Not sure but I think the T5 has a splined sleeve.

For there to be such a huge variation in failure mileage, there must be a difference in driving style, towing, terrain etc. Doesn't make sense that some would go at 55k or less and others 100k or more.

Would be interesting to do a poll and establish how many people tow, where they live and so on.
