1/4 Mile question
Hi Guys,
Looking for some advice and help on this if any one can help, there is a drag race taking place on a unused airstrip this weekend in Ireland ,apparently €50 to enter your own car. I am debating if i should strip the car down and give it a try i know i could not win it but it has to be fun trying ,i have two questions firstly does anyone know what the quarter mile time is on a standard 850 T5 /T5R or existing times for modified 850s? And what changes/mods would you recommend if i was to give it a go? Racing slicks, octane booster, etc etc Any help appreciated. Regards Jason |

RE: 1/4 Mile question
Firstly, it is fun. You will enjoy it.
Slicks will aid a T5 immenselt due to FWD traction issues, but I always say if it's not road legal then it doesnt really count, compared to a road legal car. However there are road legal semi slicks available, which i will be getting myself for when my engine build is done. You can also lower the tyre pressures in your front tyres to aid traction, and if you want to be really picky, up the pressure a bit in the rears to create less drag, but I personally wouldnt take it that far. As for times, on T5r.org someone was saying that there were a couple of RICA's T5's at Santa Pod that couldn't get under 15 seconds. So sounds like anything sub 15.5 would be good for a T5. Ross

RE: 1/4 Mile question
Jason, I saw in a US equivalent of Top Gear, they stripped a car down, anglegrinder the lot, to just a frame & engine, but importantly the front wheels were changed to more original smaller alloys due to weight, resistance etc. The rears were space savers to avoid drag/weight. They eventually took something silly like 5 secs of 0-60. Great to be able to chop something up and fix some castors underneath for sheer hell of it.

Yep, the Pod was wet. No traction in 1st and 2nd so Tony and Dave couldn't get any good times in.

RE: 1/4 Mile question
On a US Volvo web site there's a video clip of a C70 4 speed auto running 14.2 and a terminal speed of 98 mph. Apparently it has a chip upgrade, cat back and downpipe.
Somthing to aim for I guess! Keep us posted if you do run, Jason. Rgds Simon J |

RE: 1/4 Mile question
A wet or even damp track, as Andy says, would have caused no ends of problems for a T5 ( I didnt think they let you run at sant pod in the wet because the proper drag racing surface is like glass when wet) The Rover seems to have pretty good traction for a FWD, the T5 I've been in, standard, was not, serious traction problems in 1st gear. In the wet (we run even in torrential rain at Crail) I think my best was 15.3, wheels were slipping all the way up and including the change into 4th gear :S
14.2 @ 98 is a good time (is it 2wd? ), auto's can be good on the 1/4, average gear change should be around 0.4 seconds on a manual if your doing it good, so I'm told, so I have 3 of these in a run which adds over a second, as a result I have to travel faster to do the same time, if that makes any sense, 14.2 @ 102 being my best time at the moment. What sort of 60ft did the C70 get? I would imagine the 60ft to be pretty good as well as the TV isn't as high as you would expect. Ross
