Default 1987 740 B230e exhaust.

Hi all, to my dismay it looks like I am going to have to increase my winter maintenance budget to cover the cost of a new exhaust. It has started to blow from the down pipe to the front box joint, on examination the whole system looks a bit of an " Heath Robinson affair" and a bit of a mess. My local main dealer is looking for near on £350.00 for a full system "ouch". Has anybody got any advice/pointers on a better deal.Answers on a post card.
Many Thks Hylton.

To be honest £350 from a main dealer seems pretty reasonable to me

I was quoted nearly £900 from a well known exhaust and tyre supplier

I only took the car in as they were doing a free check. I obviously told them where to put said quote

Exhaust.jpg Bonkers !!

£OUCH!!! On my first 740GLE (also a 1987 model) i had a complete new system from the same supplier Mark for £90 on a special offer. That was 15 years ago though!

Hylton - your car is on the changeover year for a lot of things and there are a few different variants of exhaust, particuarly at the front end.

Hopefully this link will take you to a page of diagrams from Klarius and enable you to search through to find the one that most closely resembles what you should have.

http://webcat.klarius.eu/cgi-bin/cat...body=*ALL&kid=

Once you have the part numbers, you can search on ebay to find the parts, last one i did i ended up getting the various parts from ECP via ebay all for under £100 - think it was actually carparts4less which is one of ECPs ebay shops.

If the link doesn't work, let me know and i'll copy the likely diagrams over onto here for you.

£350 for a complete system that will fit together nice and includes all brackets and rubber hangers? Not bad.

Cheap pattern exhaust parts tend to be crap.

Agree with that. The Fleabay version on mine fell apart within a couple of years

As long as the exhaust parts aren't Euroflo they should have a reasonable service life and fit fairly easily.

Another alternative would be to go to a stainless exhaust builder and get one made, probably about £4-500 but should be guaranteed for life.

Klarius from ECP or CP4L when on big discount offers, up to 50% off at times.

They are fine, well made and in my experience longer lived than others excepting stainless. If collecting from ECP (easiest if you have one nearby) scrutinise the component parts to ensure you are not being palmed-off with damage stock or returns!!

Look at their online catalogue as 'our man' says above.
