Default Xc90 d5 manual gearbox questions

Hi all, considering a xc90 d5 with a manual 6 speed gearbox.
Is there a way of checking the fluid level and how often should the fluid be changed?

I have a v70xc ph2 auto with a 55-50sn gremlins so am familiar with fluid changing and level checking on that, but don't know much about the manual boxes.

Any advice appreciated.

There is a level plug on the side of the box. These boxes are very reliable and of course it is good practice to change the oil many don’t and have no problems at all even with high millages. If you do change the oil I would use volvos own oil. So oil changes are less critical compared to the auto versions.

The manual gearboxes don't suffer the contamination of the oil from the clutch debris that the automatics do, so changing the oil isn't nearly so critical. There is far less of a risk that it will have a premature failure through dirty oil than with the autos. However if it's done 100k or more it is a good idea and you do usually notice a slight improvement in shifts.

As has been said the gearbox is so reliable it can almost be taken for granted - but check all shifts and listen for any noise.

Is there a dip stick on the boxes like the auto 55 50sn?

There is no didstick. They are generally considered to be filled for life. Mine was on 160,000 miles and had never been changed. As others have said, the manual gearbox is much more reliable than the auto and doesn't get contaminated with friction material.

Yep - normally do mine when I get the AWD fixed as they're under there anyway :-) Generally in the scheme of things on this vehicle, not a critical issue by a long way.

Cheers
Ian.

Just to add that you loose fluid when doing this as you have to pull the drive shafts out like wise for a clutch change so it has to be at least topped up so makes sense to change it fully.

Aren't these gearboxes failing at the slave cylinder like on the S60/V70 ?
