73 ES idle
When I stop after a sustained cruise my idle will run about 200 rpm higher than it should. After I stop and idle for a few minutes it starts to slowly drift down and finally reaches 900 rpm and stays there. This process repeats each time I drive a while and stop.
When I first start up hot or cold idle will be very stable at 900. But will always repeat the above cycle when I drive and stop. No apparent vacuum leaks and once it stabilizes will idle all day at 900. Any ideas? Thanks Craig |

Hi,
Is the throttle lever settling back onto it's 'stop' and being assisted by the return spring? The spring could have weakened or worn through it's anchor hole, or the throttle shaft in the inlet manifold that goes into the throttle switch may be sticking? When your tickover is running high, try pushing the curved throttle lever where the cable runs around it against the stop, if this lowers the tickover, there's your problem. Worth trying the easiest first!! Good luck, Paul |
