What does "running on oil" mean?

This is not normal, but can happen if engine oil leaks into the intake, eg with a failed oil seal in the turbo.

Probably will occur naturally if you are doing 40/50 mile runs a day on motorways but I do 10 mins twice a day.

So what I am trying to do is a bit of preventative maintenance and see if vida says its due or close to try and force it to regenerate.

Or is it a case of no way and just hope and trust to luck? Which is Not very clever really is it?

Surely there's a way?

Also Clan... What does "running on oil" mean? sounds worrying...
forcing a regeneration is not good for the particle filter it reduces the life of it as it is extreme and should only be done as a last resort by the garage .
10 mins twice a day is going to be a killer for your particle filter . you are not a suitable candidate for a modern diesel .. hopefully you can get out more for a longer journey on the weekend perhaps and change the oil twice a year...
if the engine has an excess of oil it can find it's way up past the pistons or get blown into the breather and into the turbo inlet , these oily fumes will act as fuel and the engine runs uncontrollable to huge rpm until the oil runs out , you cannot stall it ...

Can you not block the air intake with a rag to stop the air getting in the engine?

yes if you can think of it at the time and have an 8mm hose clip screwdriver on you ...and something to block it with .

The throttle body fitted to D5 engines after 2005 should stop a runaway. It closes when the engine is switched off.

The 163hp does not have one.

So to summarise can I keep an eye on the dpf with Vida then when the soot level is getting high go for a longish drive? Would that work?

If so at what level would you consider it necessary? (haven't looked at the DPF section in vida yet)

Just trying to be proactive and anticipate the need for a long drive

Cheers

A normal regen cycle occurs once per 1.5 tanks of fuel, approximately

So plan on a longer drive every 2nd tank and you'll be fine
