Xc70 2000
Had the AA out to my XC70 2000 which wouldn't start and after two hours with no success and searching various fuse boxes the service man told me the problem was a relay switch which he did not have. I bought one on-line. Green base with red cover, 103 marked on top. On front "VOLVO" 9434225, 89 8797 000, Fuel-Pump Controller. However, i was not shown the switch, told which fuse box it came from or the fuse box location. I cannot find anything in my use manual. Can anyone help. Thanks

Fuel pump relay sits in the CEM module.
Take the black panel with the footwell light off from the bottom of the drivers side of the dashboard - it's held on by 2 torx screws - and you'll see the relay, but it's a little black one as far as I can remember (mines a 2002 D5 so it may have changed) However - what's you fuel level showing? anywhere around 1/8th tank is indicating a possible dodgy fuel pump and you may get it to start by putting a couple of gallons of fuel in it. Which engine have you got? and how many miles? If it's a 2.5D the above may be wrong! |

2000 xc will be a 2.4t
There are relays in the rear panel above the battery too Not sure which ones are there but I know I had to add one for my trailer wiring.

Thank you for reply. Fuel pump is OK according to AA. Engine is 2435 CC, mileage 128700. Will check panel later today.

Hi,
As reggit says if the tank is low then I would put a couple of gallons of petrol in first. There has been several posts where the petrol engine will not start until more fuel is added. I had this happen to me several years ago when the fuel gauge was just above the red (strange it never happened again. Touching wood!). Put a can of petrol in the tank and it started first time! I would of thought a faulty relay would show a loss of fuel pressure and I would expect the AA man would check the fuel pressure? Bob

Assuming it's phase 2 as that's the section you're in - don't discount a fuel issue - the tanks are a saddle shape due to the propshaft (same tank on 2WD as well) which means extra plumbing to empty the passenger side of the tank. It's not unheard of for this to have failed, hence my question of 'what does the fuel gauge show'? FYI - the pump on my V70 D5 failed intermittently and the car didn't store fault codes after the ignition was turned off - this made fault finding a PITA. |

Does it give you any messages on the dash when trying to start it?
Does it turn over ok? Does it fire at all? On a side note my electric ecus went haywire and everything shut down when my dice was connected the other day.... mine would start but then die. Say reduced performance message. Switched it off and back on and it ran fine and all codes cleared

Fuel Pump Relay
Thanks to everyone who replied. Still have problem. Even been to Volvo in Sweden and info. they gave didn't really help. Discovered car is 2001 and I believe a Heritage Model - only 53,000+ manufactured. Not fuse box in engine compartment and box in facia on RH passenger side only contains fuses, no relays. Sweden said box is up under steering wheel, but diagrams show LH side with pedals so tried driver side but only small space, no fuse box. Box in rear has some switches - unmarked and part of it seems to be behind LH panel.
Sweden also said switch I purchased was wrong part number. Correct one is :- 30765071. Also suggested try putting fog light switch in. That's it for now. |

Did you top-up the fuel?
As others have suggested, a low fuel level (and failed pump to move fuel from one side of tank to the other) could cause no-start. Sometimes it's the simplest things... |
