V70 Faults and price to fix

2006 V70 D5 185bhp fwd 7 Seater

The car is coming to 200k in a few days and need to know whether to invest in it or not, Im the 2nd owner I bought it at just under 161k it has Full Volvo main dealer history including cambelt but never had the auto box oil changed ever until 2016 when problems started 4-5 litres were changed.

The current problems are the bottom buttons (4 or five buttons) for the climate console do not work apparently it needs coding to the car the reverse sensors do not work service error and the gearbox has become more of a pain whereby if its stuck in first or 2nd I cannot override and go manual when I shift up or down nothing happens, it starts to work when it wants to within 5 to 10 seconds.

The engine and bodywork interior and exterior is in excellent nick, just need some advice on whether these engines are good for 300k, most of the mileage I do is very local with odd motorway miles, my driving style is not to let the accelerator touch the magic button under it.

The car is due to go into a Volvo specialist garage in Preston next week for a diagnostic, been given the following:

Supply and fit Refurb Gearbox £550+300 labour
Gearbox adaption around £50
Full valve body £450 + fitting cost
couple of solenoids around £100ish

I think the cambelt is also due so another £200 to £250
2 tyres fitted £55
and whatever the cost is for the reverse sensors to work again and the climate console recode.

I suppose if I get everything done at the same place I could get away with a few quid change from a grand, but then something else could go badda boom not so cut and paste eh!

readview volvo specialist in huncote nr accrington are a good cheap garage if money is tight .give them a call you might be suprised i have used them they were great ..

You need to swap out around 3 times that to make adescernible difference on old, original fluid so do some repeated drain and fills followed by a fluid counter reset.

I've brought several boxes back from the brink with simple fluid changes.

The tires and timing belt are common maintenance items so no biggie there.

What's too bad is that you seem not to be the one who does fluid changes. I'd try refreshing the transmission's fluid again to see if the stickiness would vanish.

"It starts to work when it wants to..." is most encouraging. Sounds like a little dirt removal could help. Many have had success.

But then you jump to:

That's double talk. Get a damn rebuild transmission and skip all that "Full valve body + fitting cost plus a "couple of solenoids".

It should read: Refurb gearbox + installation + any electronic adaption. Too many words my friend.

I have no idea about your ACC buttons not working. It sounds like people are talking their turns lying to you.

Try one or more transmission drain and fills...at least see what comes out the first time. Can you trust a garage to tell you? Can you trust these guys to use the correct fluid?

Cool it on the reverse sensors working. That's the least of your probs.

For the gearbox thing the best would be a used one because even with a new/refurb valve body your clutch packs may not be in a good shape at this point.

On the other side, a used box is a gamble. Some of these geartronic have been reliable if the fluid was replaced, but how do you make sure of that, not to mention how do you make sure it's not a high miller?

Plus, funny additional problems may happen when replacing a box at a place that's not perfectly used with these cars.

Remember , what ever you spend giving the car a mid term refresh it will always be cheaper than getting another car ! If it looks smart and clean still , then go for it . £550 for a good working gearbox is a bargain .

We were quoted around £3k for a refurbished gearbox. TF80 6-speed
