Default remote transceiver compatibility question

My new 850R wasn't supplied with any remote locking/alarm fobs, and as its a Japanese model the tranceiver probably isn't the same as the UK market part and will be using a different frequency.

I have a tranceiver and 2x fobs that I bought for my '97 S70 - does anyone know if the transceiver is the same part and is shared by a '96 850 and a '97 S70? If so I'll be able to swap tranceivers and use the fobs that came with that

Many thanks

Default Remote Fob and Keys

Not 100% sure but I believe that if you have fobs and matching (paired) transceiver then you should be able to simply change the transceiver.

The usual problem appears to be trying to match different fobs to existing transceiver and usually results in an expensive visit to main dealer.

I may be completely wrong on this but at least the work to do this only requires the removal of the dash top.

Would be useful to many people if this could be confirmed as this seems to come up quite regularly, particularly with these older cars changing hands without working/ missing fobs.

i wrote in another post but I'll confirm again for others...

In my experience, if you've a matched set of fobs with transceiver these can be walked from car to car. A 5 minute swap. The problem is the 'matched-set', which variously costs £300-400 a go...

Not sure if 850 can be swapped with V70 etc but for others I confirm, I've two 99 cars (both with 9472461) and these definitely allow swaps. There's two part numbers on V70

9472463
9472461 (I confirm possible to swap between two 99 cars).

Can't speak for 9472463 but the odds of this working look good to me.

Japanese frequency or not, (if there is a difference?) with a pricey to repalce set, you've done well.

Thanks for the feedback - In that case I'll try and swap the tranceivers over when I do the instrument cluster swap.

Thanks again

The easiest way to do the swop is from under the dash as the transceiver unit slides off and on to a black bracket; I recently replaced the central control locking unit of my 2005 C70 which is the same unit used on the P1 V70's with a unit from a breaker.

The '98 V70 P1 has either the same unit used in the earlier 850s up to mid/late 1998 or the later '98 updated unit which is used in the P2's in post late '98 models the fobs are coded to the car not the transceiver - the C70 (850 based) uses the same unit 1998 to 2005. If you buy a second hand unit, that unit should come with the fob(s) which will be coded to it.

The unit is a straight swap over and takes only a few minutes to do depending upon how easy you find it to get in under the dash - lying on your back with your feet over the back of the seat gives enough space to get both arms in under the dash aka the dashboard limbo.

To check which unit you need, use a mirror and torch to establish which unit you have - if you slide off the unit from its bracket without removing the multi-plugs it has just enough slack on the cables to be able to read the part number which makes sure you get the right replacement - you don't even need to slide it back on the bracket - it will just hang there on the cables until you can get a replacement.

Are we all talking about the same unit?

When I modified my receiver (extended the aerial so the fob's signal could be picked up more readily) the unit was under the dash top, mounted above the instrument cluster. This on a 1998 V70. Is the 850 different?

It would seem as though they are different. As I understand it the "receiver unit" is the bit with the aerial for central locking/alarm unit - the actual processor often called the transceiver unit for central locking/alarm module, shown in the photo below, is the black box mounted under the dash above the accelerator pedal in the 850's and early P1 V70's ie those with a similar body style to the 850s and many crossover parts. They were subsequently upgraded/updated to a unit which is used in the P2s. In the P2 the receiver unit is built into the mirror and coded to the vehicle; I don't know where that how or where it is located the later P1s.

TYPO!!!!

P1s should read P80

That P80 platform was in use from 1991 to 2005 ie from the first 850s in 1991 to the last C70 cabriolet in 2005; in theory any one of the 6 model variants could have the same type of central locking alarm module shown in the photo above.

Is that definitely the only box you need to change with fobs? I recently tried this on my 05 C70 with known working items but the fobs didn't work. Also, when I put the original box back, the alarm kept going off until I drove the car, after that the alarm stopped going off.
