HI ALL.
had the EMMISION SERVICE REQUIRED message today came up with ECM 4405 EGR open position. so i pressumes its stuck . has anyone stripped an egr valve down to clean if so any ptifalls to watch out for or do i just go for new/ second hand. the mixer was cleaned out about 6 months ago and that is clear. i take it the egr is sat ontop of the cooler and can be taken of in situ is that correct. mike

I cleaned mine as the car had the message when I bought it (good for discount!).
As usual, it's a bit fiddly getting the mixer off, and the black gunk is pretty nasty stuff - make sure you double glove... I flushed everything out with a bit of petrol, followed by copious amounts of carb cleaner which seemed to shift the deposits fairly easily. Left it all to drain and dry off before refitting. 25K miles later and no reoccurance. |

Hi Mike,
Sorry didn't make it clear - I removed and cleaned both the mixer pipe and the cooler assembly (with the solenoid on the top). There was a serious amount of gunk in the cooler as well as the mixer pipe. From memory I removed the solenoid from the cooler to clean it... |
