I think if you are not a boy racer, the phase 2 diesel is a much better safer car, although they cost more. The 115hp version is a good performer, but like all V40's take a good look at the rear suspension, for worn bushes and links because they are not fun to change. The cam belt service if done correctly with quality parts including a new water pump is expensive, so either buy one cheaply that is due a new belt or get one that does not need it changing and where you have a receipt that can be checked to make sure the job was done correctly using quality parts.
If you decide on a diesel make sure there is no sign of smoke on start, at full power or at idle when hot in particular and check for oil leaks as a leak from the cam seals or turbo can indicate an expensive repair is in the offing. If you buy a good 1.9D the main block will last a long time if you use a good quality 5/40 synthetic oil and Volvo filters, as apart from the fact that Renault make very good engine blocks, it is a detuned diesel in effect as the same block is used in the Laguna 1.9D and boosted to 130hp. I think all V40's seem to suffer from brake disc corrosion. The outside rim of my rear brake discs and the inside inner area (Difficult to see) of the front discs was badly corroded when I got my V40 and that seems to be a common fault. |
