Brakes - intermittent sticking
Hello all,
Been away for a while - very busy and the V40 has been running well! Until now... Not a biggie - my offside front brake is intermittently sticking. Having no tools and no space I haven't checked it out fully, but it's definitely just that side - the disc feels (very) hot if it has been sticking. So my guess is that it's probably the caliper sticking? I'll probably stick new discs and pads on the front anyway, but is it possible that the caliper is in good order but just needs regreasing? If I have a garage fit new discs and pads, is this an easy enough task to do at the same time? Or is it likely the caliper is shot and needs replacing? Any tips on discs and pads to buy? Some fairly cheap Pagid and Eicher ones on eurocarparts - any good? Thanks! |

Jack it up and have a look at it, it may just all need cleaning up my O/S front disc was sticking on half of the disc.
Noticing the runout I suspected the disc had warped but it just wasn't seated as flat as it should be against the hub. I stripped down both sides but ensured a carefully cleaned up the hubs and disc mounting faces and pad mounting faces on the caliper retainer till they were shiny with emery paper then remounted everything with fresh pads and cleaned and regreased the caliper guides (high temp silicone grease). Problem solved. If you stick it in the garage they will likely just change the discs and pads and not clean up the components correctely, (because it takes too much time) which could lead to the prob occuring again. Which is why I always do my own brakes, don't trust anyne else to do it properly. Measure the thickness of the discs they may not need replacing or even the pads, a good clean will take a little time I took a day and a half over it but could save you money and will hopefully prevent the issue reoccuring.

Sounds like a seized caliper. I had the same on the NSF (passenger front) and by just replacing the calliper, all was fine. If the brakes have heated up too much, you might have fried the brake fluid and that too might need changing. Only change the discs and pads if they are very worn or damaged.
Where abouts London are you? If you are near me (Barking, East London, Essex) I have a spare calliper What mcouchard has also suggested, makes sense. The garage will never clean the calipers, pins and guides.

I had a sticky rear caliper on my S40 T5, I had suspected as much, when my car was in the main dealer for its free service (had a few issues with the car complained got a free service), they advised it was sticking, when they were doing the check on the brakes, as a result they stripped it down cleaned and reassembled it, so I was expecting to be charged for this when I collected the car, butthey bit did it all free of charge, they also did the software update and didn't charge me :-), and never bothered to charge me for the hire car, they comp'd everything, mind you I saw the salesman who sold the car and he said he'd never seen as many emails between the two branches and head office!!!
My local indy only charged me £30 last year to fit new discs and pads (which I supplied) and my braided brake lines (on the V40 T4) so I can't imagine a decent indy charging a lot to clean/regrease a caliper, depend if you have a good indy or not, as said earlier most will prob just say new discs & pads, & replace caliper.... I've been going to my indy for over 8 years so I have a good relationship with him and I trust him, he doesn't do anything unless its needed Last edited by scoobysn7x; Aug 17th, 2012 at 17:24. |

Thanks for all the input.
I guess I'll strip it down, clean it all up, and take a look at the pads while I'm at it. The discs look fine, but I'll check them out too while I'm at it. I'm in south London, Peckham way - I might be in touch if the caliper is shot - thanks! |
