Thanks Mike.Got the gearbox torque mountings sorted ,but clonking still persists.Am going to put the new driveshaft bolts on this weekend,so hope that will cure it! If not, i don't know what else it could be as i have already done top engine mount,control arms and drop links.The top strut mounts look fine and i've had a good look at the bottom ball joints ,so i can't think of anything else.It's just starting to get annoying!

I had a clicking / clunking when accelerating / deccelerating and all it took was some glue on the drive shaft seals!! Bit of loctite, job done Jon |

The reason why? Sounds like your vehicle has had the [unofficially named] stage 1 fix - where: ...Completely remove both front axles from the hub assembly. Once the axle is removed, the axle and hub interface should be thoroughly cleaned using cleaner P/N.... Apply metal adhesive P/N... evenly throughout the axle and hub interface. The sealing washer P/N.... between the axle and hub should be replaced on certain vehicles.... Reinstall the axles and allow 6 hours for metal adhesive to cure... Depending on the vehicle, driver, miles covered, even the technician doing the job - I am aware that for a number of owners this 'stage 1 fix' only lasted several thousand miles (e.g. 5 to 10,000) before the noise came back. After complaints Volvo then started to install the XC90 axle bolts 'as a stage 2 fix' which [to date] has fixed the problem for many owners. Some Volvo dealers and independant mechanics may not be aware of the 'stage 2 fix'. Good luck and I hope it gives you many trouble free miles! |

Did you check the bolts???
Quote:
If you haven't checked the bolts this is dead simple; pop out the plastic dust caps in the centre of the front wheels, take a 14mm socket and see if the bolts tighten. If they do move when tightenning then the thread lock has gone and you will find that the noise returns after just a few miles as they work loose again. Apply the fix above by replacing the bolts with the XC90 ones with threadlock already applied and a rubber locking washer. |

Hey Guys, Just so you know, I had the seals glued when the car was at 82,000 miles (when I purchased the car and noticed the noise), and now the car is at 97500 miles, and the noise is back intermittently.
I have spoken to the guy who services it for me, and he said he will just re-do them on the next service. He says it's not a safety issue, just gets annoying, and can get loud! Jon |

The mount has been changed charged about £100 But no difference, the garaged i showed said its the driveshaft which i found a bit unbelieveable. He showed me some play in the front wheel. I didnt think that would be driveshaft, the knocking still continues. So what could it be and how much am i looking at? Also i have put some xenon bulbs in and he goes its burning up the cable is that possible?? thanks adivce needed not very happt atm |

If you can't do it yourself;
1. drive it into any garage, point to the black plastic caps in the middle of the front wheels and say you want the bolts under there tightenning to 50Nm, should take about 5 seconds each so if they charge you more than a cup of coffee you've been had. 2. Drive down the road and if the noise has gone (don't worry it will soon be back) then you've found the problem. If you still have the noise then ignore steps 3 - 5 3 Drive to your local stealer and buy 2 of the bolts as listed in this thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpo...5&postcount=10 4 drive back to your local mechanic, buy him another crap cup of coffee while he unscrews the old bolts and fits the new ones. Wait 10 mins for the threadlock to go off. 5 Drive around without the sound of knocking in your ears. If this doesn't fix it, I'd get along to a dealer and get it checked out properly. Search on here for the dealers we can trust thread. Hope you get it sorted soon and that it's not to expensive Last edited by D5 Monkey; Jun 7th, 2007 at 16:23. Reason: link to previous thread |
