I have the definitive answer to this , It is the throttle flap sticking in its housing , this is usualy accompanied with no power at all and some black smoke and knocking for a few seconds until the vibration frees it off .
I'm surprised the dealers are is struggling with this , its a known issue and has a bulletin on it .. Change the plastic throttle housing and see how it goes ...

I was thinking along the same lines a Kris, (I like the suggestion or air in the fuel) The injector rail pressure is falling off when the car is left for a while, for example leaking slowly past a slightly leaky injector, when you come to start it rail pressure needs to build up to say 300bar to start working properly, this could be achieved by your short period of cranking and slow running, hence starts OK second time.
If the dealer could look at the pressure on the rail pressure sensor (on the computer), after the car is left for a while, they may see a low pressure if they can make it start in this way you describe where the revs don't build up. I guess a "low rail pressure" fault may not have time to register, when this happens. or maybe just buy a V70 |

The problem is that it will be hard to reproduce and when they do , it will free off and they will be none the wiser ...Unless they have experience ..It seems to happen mainly at low ambient temperatures well worth the £60 for a new throttle housing ...

2.0D starting Problem
Hi Guys,
I had this problem with my 2006 S40 2.0D It took Volvo no less than 2 years and 6 visits to figure it out! (they couldn't reproduce the problem whenever it was with them...conveniently) In the end it was the Throttle Body. I dont know if they replaced the whole thing or just part of it but its been fine ever since...hasn't missed a beat in 6 months now. Hope this helps! |

I've had the same intermittent starting issue with my 2006 V50 2.0D for a few weeks now, since the car went out of 3 year warranty. It doesn't matter if the car is cold or warm or has just been driven. Sometimes it won't start first time (the engine turns but won't fire), sometimes second time, sometimes it goes days without a problem, usually when it's due to go to the mechanic to be checked out. Yesterday it refused to start at all. By lunchtime it started at the 3rd attempt. Today, sometimes Ok, sometimes starting second time. Now due to go back to garage, hopefully with a more frequent problem than before. The posts here have been the most useful, thanks Clan (consider a move to Scotland?) I'll get the dealer to look at the throttle flap sticking.
Cheers! |

What is really needed, is "Clan Clones" being made and distributed the length and breadth of Britain. The man's a veritable font of worth knowing wisdom.
Even though I've now bought a petrol Focus 1.6 Climate [oh how I miss the power and road presence of the S40 2. D SE] Until you go back to Fords, do you realise how good the body build of the S40 new shape Volvo's are. And yes this forum is IMHO the best car forum on the web. The Ford Forums are mainly populated by kids pimping up Fiesta's and Foci's. Hence I keep coming back here for some decent forum content.
