If memory serves, it's not possible to clean the switch but you can leave the jumper wire in place as a temporary measure
I found this picture of the internal of a PNP switch. Seems cleanable, but as I have a manual I caanot speak out of experience. If it were mine I would certainly give it a try as it is broken anyway.

Well that was short lived....

I've hard wired the patch wire and now sadly the car won't start at all - I've checked the fuses behind the ashtray and they are all good, I've obviously dropped a bollock somewhere.

Pfft.

hi like i suggested you can clean as much of the black gunge of the copper slide ,thats what fixed mine ,break cleaner on a cloth is another option and contact cleaner ,see how much rubbish come off onto the cloth ,then a small smear of silicone grease or contact grease hopefully will bring the car back to life ,keep us informed , we may need a telephone conversation if that helps !

Is it easy to access the PNP, I'm guessing it's underneath the car....?

The diesel auto box is ZF
Your car being petrol I'm thinking it's Asin Warner. If volvo have kept access the same you need to remove some trims and gently prize the gear lever cover up the gear lever as high as you can this will expose the inhibitor for you to clean of the years of gunge build up .from the contactor

Refitted the charged up battery and randomly the car fired up straight away 🤨

I'll be using it for a few days to confirm it's all good, then I'll tackle the inhibitor.

Thank you all for the help.

the shroud around the gear lever selector panel will need to come off and i think disconnect heated seats switchs easy job then ease the selector cover up the gear stick you will then see the inhibitor fitting it can be removed BUT i woud leave it intact and clean off as much gunge as you can please take your time do not rush the job and hopefully like mine it all works ok again , with the tempery EXCITER wire then disconnected.

Thank you

I have removed these bits before to try to get access to the auto selector bulb, which I have replaced but struggled to get into it's slot ( although it lights up the letters a bit )

I'll give it a whirl in a few days and report back.

I too have had the same fun replacing that bulb various times during my 23 years of ownership of my volvo 900 , the older you get the more tricky it has become for me , i once managed to break the black slide which travels with the gear lever
and shows what gear you are in, i have a second hand one which i fitted and got working , if you have done this job in that area hopefully you can clean the INHIBITOR switch .
