I do get "alarm system service required" or something to that effect, yes. But it doesn't come up every time I start the car like the "screen wash low" warning does.

Is the battery leak from the siren something that could be easily inspected?

I did not get the warning when switching on, I think is was when putting ignition on only or something I forget now.

The siren is in the bulkhead and sealed, I just replaced mine but did cut the old one open and yes the batteries had leaked and melted the circuit board. I would be sure yours would be the same if you get that warning and it's the original one.

Located under the scuttle panel (engine bay where wipers sit) more on the passenger side, easy to get to and replace.

+1 for the siren unit. It seems to be a weak component. Its internal battery is like a long term self destruct timing unit. Sooner or later it seems to kill it self. In my case it was after 6 years.

Looking back to when I first bought this car (from an auction with no keys or papers) I recall it really didn't like being opened. It's hazzard lights and headlamps would flash like mad, but it didn't make a sound. I'm wondering if the people who collected it for the auction disconnected the siren so they could hear themselves think. It's certainly a possibility I suppose.
Today was way too cold for me to take the job on - 5C and an icy blast of a wind. I hope for better tomorrow!

Thumbs up

It turned out to be the siren after all! So well done to those above who tipped it as the culprit. As soon as I'd taken it out of circuit the 5A fuses stopped blowing and the heater/air-con etc all came on again. So very pleased with that, especially given the weather we're not enjoying at the moment!

Glad you found the fault, will you be replacing the siren?

Me personally can not live with faults on a car and having warnings come up, bit ocd.

No I won't replace it. It's not something I need where I live. Car theft is pretty well unknown here. What did worry me was the possibility the CMU would notice the siren had been disconnected, assume an attempted theft, and lock everything down, necessitating a visit to the main dealer on the back of a low-loader. Fortunately, however, the removal of the siren had no such unpleasant consequences - I didn't even get a notification of anything amiss on the messages screen!

I expect it reports back to the insurance company ! Seriously, it will void your insurance if the car gets stolen and the investigation starts ...,

Good point! Must admit that hadn't occurred to me.
Best get a replacement, then.
