Default Burning smell with smoke in cabin

Travelled 10 miles home from work this afternoon in terrible rain. 2 mins from home got a really strong burning electrical/plastic/bake lite smell. Stopped and opened door. Watched smoke make a run for it, turned everything off. Suspect fan or resistor or should I be looking elsewhere? If it is the fan, is it a difficult job?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I prefer to be warm rather than smoked...

Was the smoke coming from the fan vents or the door?
I've read other posts of the wiring in the door breaking down and overheating.

Thanks for the reply. Smoke seems to be coming from the back of the drivers footwell. Possibly both footwells. All door controls are working. No smoke from vents.
Still suspect the resistor.
