Default Software reset after steering angle sensor replacement

Hi all,

The XC90 I have just bought had the steering angle sensor replaced by the dealer. It was fine when I test drove it but then between putting the deposit down and picking it up the dtsc warning came on and it turned out to be the angle sensor so they replaced it at their expense. No warning lights on the dash now but the steering is heavy at low speed, like the speed sensitive steering is not working, and I haven't noticed the active bi-xenon lights bending like I expected them to. Could these be a sign that the software was not reset once the steering angle sensor was replaced as I assume both of these systems use a signal from the angle sensor? I didn't notice an issue with the steering when I test drove it, but then again I've only noticed it now after low speed driving in car parks etc. Some posts say you need a software reset in Vida after replacing the sensor, others say you don't. I doubt they would have performed a reset in Vida as they are just a normal 2nd hand dealer with a workshop attached.

Any thoughts on whether a reset could solve these issues? I'm planning to get set up with Vida myself but having just bought the car I haven't got the money at the moment. I've got an icarsoft i906 reader which I will try tonight but I doubt that will help me with this.

Silly question but did they replace with NEW VOLVO part or pattern/used part?

My anti-skid light comes on now and then and as everything else checks out OK, it's likely to be the angle sensor. Sometimes it goes off on its own, otherwise I clear the fault with my generic reader or Vida.

I have also disconnected the battery waited 15 minutes and then reconnect with key in position II, and this seems to clear all faults and resets all sensors.
Maybe worth a try?

Thanks for your reply trumpetdropper.

They said they used a genuine Volvo part which cost them £250, but I did not see the packaging or invoice. They said they needed to keep the invoice as they need it for VAT purposes which sounds fair. I'm not sure if £250 for a genuine part sounds about right or not. In hindsight I should have insisted to at least see the invoice but I had no reason to question it at the time.

I'll try it with my code reader later then and see what that picks up. I'll also try the built in thing where you can see which modules have a code stored on the dash. I have arranged to try another battery with someone at the weekend so I could take the same opportunity to leave it off for 15 minutes and reset everything that way as well.

The price quoted seems about right for it.
i did need to reset warnings in mine when I replaced it but I also had to get the abs module software reloaded as it had got stuck in the warning which I couldn’t clear with VIDA.
It’s possible worth seeing if anyone near by has VIDA and could do a quick read and reset as a lot of generic reads will miss some things.

Well I spent a bit of time out there this evening and found a few codes in the built in diagnostic in the dash. The dash showed errors in ECM, CCM, REM, PHM and HCM 😪 My code reader would not connect to the ECM or HCM, REM didn't show any codes on the reader, CCM said "CCM-0040 Air quality sensor. Internal fault" and PHM said "PHM-0030 Reserve battery. Voltage too low". I guess i should have cleared the faults and checked again in a week or so, I just gave up and came in as I was feeling a bit disheartened. But critically nothing for SAS so the issue I'm having is not related to a software reset by the looks of it. I also checked the fuse that covers electric power steering assistance, active bi-xenon and self levelling but it was fine.

The car is under warranty and I only bought it last weekend so I should have some comeback with the dealer but I was hoping to be able to at least diagnose it myself if not fix it if it was something cheap and easy. They don't strike me as a Volvo specialist so I'm a bit reluctant to just leave it with them, but I may have no other choice.

CCM-0040 Air quality sensor. Internal fault
PHM-0030 Reserve battery. Voltage too low

These are trivial and easy to fix if you want, or can be ignored.

For the phone it means that the backup battery is weak and should be replace.d

For the climate control it means the Air Quality Sensor should be replaced. But many people ignore it. The AQS provides the signal to drive the automatic internal / external recirculating air switch

Thanks SwissXC90. I must admit I'm not really bothered about either of those, but I may replace the air sensor at some point. It is working though, we drove through some smoke and got the smallest wiff of smoke in the car, my wife didn't even notice it at all.

I just wish I could sort out these other little points. The power steering is not too bad really, I just know it's not quite right so it bothers me! And the error in the headlight control unit is not really a problem as the headlights work and point ahead. Should the lights perform a self levelling test when you switch on? They don't at the moment but I'm not sure if that's because it's got self levelling suspension so doesn't need self levelling headlights as well
