Default Help Me Buy The Correct Coolant Temperature Sensor (B230FK)

As per the title chaps,

Car is a '96 940 in LPT flavour (B230FK engine). I'd like to replace my CTS however there appear to be two different sensors available, one for the sender/guage and one that controls the ECU. It's the one for the ECU I need, it has a white plug and sits just below the intake manifold on cylinder 3....

My local Volvo parts department are not very useful, after 20 mins on the phone they tell me there's only one sensor and it's the one to control the temp guage in the car, I know this isn't right. What's more they want to charge me £56 for it and refuse to provide the part number

After some googling it seems the part number I actually need is 1346030? Does that sound right?

Also, there seem to be a numbner of decent branded aftermarket options available (Meyle/Bosch etc), are these any good or should I stick to OEM?

Links to buy/order the correct one would be even better!

TIA

According to the Volvo Parts Webstore, that part number is in fact an Intake Air Temperature sensor.

https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/p...chTerm=1346030

However a bit more digging reveals :

https://www.ipdusa.com/products/6210...ure-ect-sensor

More digging reveals :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-740...0AAOSwNRdX~2HY

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-940...4AAOSwNRdX~2Hq

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-960...oAAOSwPCVX~2IN

Also found this once i found the Bosch part number :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coolant-T...IAAOSwq8BZbVsw

The Bosch number is 0280130032 and fits umpteen different makes of car and umpteen different models from each make.

There are 2 choices above, the PartsMonster and the Cambiare (the cheaper one) and i've used parts from both companies without complaint so "you pays yer money and takes yer choice".
For the record, OEM is Bosch, it is after all their injection system.

Meyle should be good as well but about 18 months back i bought some Meyle drop links that were fake. They lasted about 2 months.
Not saying that the temperature sensors are likely to be the same but there's always that chance.

Thanks mate.

The problem is that these car's have two sensors, confusingly both of which are referred to as the 'Coolant Temperature Sensor'. One speaks to the ECU/fuel injection system, the other is purely to drive the sender/guage in the car.

I suspect the one's you've posted links to are the latter where-as the one I need is the sensor for the ECU/injection/fuel supply...

Trying to distinguish between the two types and ensuring I buy the 'ECU' one rather than the 'sender' one is the task at hand.

I'm struggling frankly, hence the request for the part numbers....

No, those are the EFi/ECU sensors, this is the sender for the temperature gauge :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kerr-Nels...0AAOSwIFtaCtsm

Single wire for the gauge, two wires for the ECU and they're in different locations as well, the ECU one is i believe under the manifold between pots 3 & 4 on the red block and the gauge sensor is on the 'stat housing.

The links i posted earlier should be correct, the part is that common on Bosch systems it's almost generic.

Good man, really appreciate the legwork on your part

No way I'm paying £56 for a Volvo one (It'll probably be a Bosch unit re-branded anyway)

^^Unfortunately having checked it out, the link you'd posted is the sender sensor for diesel models....

The sender sensor for red block variants is very much a two pin affair and looks identical to the ECU/Fueling one, so distinguishing between the two is still the issue...

Taken from the FAQ on site...

"Engine Temperature Sensors. The B230F of the vintage discussed, 1989-1995 have in effect three temp sensors. The Temperature Gauge Sensor is at the front under intake manifold runner number two, just ahead of the knock sensor which is bolted in at an angle. It has two round pin connectors, one signal, one ground. For resistance ratings, see the link noted. Behind the knock sensor under manifold runner three is the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor - ECT -which is in effect two sensors in one housing. Two NTC thermistors are combined in one ECT sensor housing with two flat connectors and ground through the housing into the manifold. One of the temp sensor signals goes to the LH fuel injection computer, the other to the EZK ignition computer. When you remove any of the sensors, disconnect the battery negative cable."

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Temperatu...QAAOSwmrlUxhM2

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-940...8AAOSw9mpaDJ-K

I'm just keen to make sure I end up with/buy a Coolant Temperature sensor rather than the sensor that works the sender alone by mistake, because as mentioned they look exactly the same!

EDIT: I found my answers burried in the FAQ Turns out the part number I'd referenced in my original post was spot on...

"Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Removing the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (the rear-most of the three sensors, Volvo p/n 1346030"

More info can be found here for anyone else who finds themsleved confused by this in the future....

Yeah, 1346030 is correct.

The two sensors don't look exactly the same. The gauge temp sensor (in those two links) has a 'D' shaped connector, whereas the ECU temp sensor has a square connector the same as the fuel injectors.

Which sensor are you on about, the temp gauge or the ECU sensor?

Either way, have a look at Pg53 of this pdf, it should land on that page if i've done the link right but it shows a two wire sender for the temperature gauge!

You were right on that one!

In case you haven't already realised it, Volvo keep changing things!

Just to clarify, which sensor are you after and why do you want/need to change it?
