Head steady/top engine mount
Hi all,
Having now replaced all 3 belts on my particular D5, I have got to the point where I'm trying to re-fit the head steady, which is a substantial alloy casting on this particular variant. Problem is, the casting is well out of alignment with its various mounting holes. The only way I can see of getting the alignment back is by jacking up the engine by about 20mm whereupon I would hope everything pops back into place and I can get the bolts started. I'm just asking whether it is indeed necessary to jack up the engine in order to re-fit the top engine mount? |

I'll be watching this with interest as I have to replace my top engine mount and wouldn't have thought to support the engine first.

Mine's not the same as yours, though. IIRC, you have the previous arrangement using a pressed steel steady. Mine is two big chunks of cast alloy like this:

Serves a similar purpose, though.
I thought, 5 bolts, swap it over and away I go. I think I will put a jack under...just in case.

Yeah, I make the same mistake all the time, too. The problem seems to be that the designers cram all this stuff in on their computer CAD screens and it looks all nice and neat with very little wasted space and such like, which is all very well - until someone needs to actually work on it! I'm not exaggerating when I say I should have taken the engine out to do those belts; it would have saved me heaps of time.

I can confirm that it was indeed necessary to jack the engine up to re-fit the head steady. Other models may vary of course, but certainly on mine it would not have been possible to re-fit it any other way. (2008 V70 P3). The trolley jack is your friend here.
