Snow chains
Has anyone used or does anyone know whether the snow chains sold by Lidl are ok to use on a 2006 XC70. I have a set and next week will be heading up to the frozen wastes of the English Welsh border around Hay on Wye with the caravan. The forecast shows snow so it would seem worth taking them. They are of the backless variety. Any comments gratefully accepted.

I've never owned or used any,but as you have them "in stock" and given the forecast and where you're going it would seem to me to be a wise precaution to take them with you.

Be careful, many Volvo’s need backless, front only mount chains and usingbthebwrong type will ruins your brakes, suspension and could give you a large repair bill, plus you can only use them on snow - no use on frost or ice.
Best get some winter tyres if you are seriously concerned, or if you don’t want to spend that much get snowsocks.

You've got an XC70 so with decent tyres you should be ok.

+1 for snow socks (unless you have winter or all-season tyres). I have snow chains but they are the Thule Easy Fit 247 model which are very easy to fit, but all rather pricey. As noted above, get the wrong chains and you could be in trouble.

This isn’t about whethet you fit theming the front or rear axle, it is about the style of chain fitting

Where around Hay on Wye are you going to need snow chains ?
Main roads will be cleared and gritted along with most B roads and if you do get snowed in why not turn the heating up and enjoy the extra break. Fresh snow gives plenty of grip as does ice if driven properly. I seriously doubt chains on your front wheels will be much help when towing the caravan, if the conditions are that bad leave it there and come back for it when conditions improve. Paul. |
