XC60 Cutting Out
Hi all,
I’m new to this site having just purchased a four year old XC60. I only picked it up yesterday and, so far, am delighted with it... Except for one problem. I’ve taken it out, today, and done approx. 150 miles (visiting Lancashire and back). On three occasions, it cut out while I was driving! Each time, I was going slowly / slowing down and, while this was disconcerting, I initially questioned if it was me, stalling the car. However, I wasn’t convinced by this and have ruled that out. I’m obviously concerned that there is an issue with my new car (thankfully, I have a warranty), but I feel that this issue might be due to my lack of experience with the stop / start ignition. I suppose, my question is, can the car cut out if you put it into neutral while also taking your foot off the clutch, when travelling? Obviously, not a driving technique that I try to employ, but I’m trying to figure out why it should be cutting like this and it’s all I can think that I might have done to cause the issue. The car has manual gears and while I know the stop / start is designed to stop if you are in neutral and your foot is off the clutch, I didn’t think this would happen when travelling! Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated. Thanks, Boothen |

Bit of a glitch that you will get used to. Stop Start will come on before you reach a halt but only very low speed. If you turn off stop/start and it still does it then you may have a problem.

Thanks for the quick reply. I hope that it is only the ‘glitch’ that I’m experiencing. I’ve experienced the stop / start working correctly, but when it cuts out while I’m travelling, the yellow dashboard warning lights flash and then I’m left with the press start message, in order to get going again. It seems quite dangerous, but I suppose the obvious solution is not to drive in neutral with your foot off the clutch! Thanks again.

If it is a diesel engine then sounds a bit like the fuel filter needs replacing, make sure it is an official Volvo one to ensure no issues. Worth having checked out.

From your description I'm guessing it is a manual transmission.
My 2014 D4 AWD had to be in neutral with the hand brake on for the stop/start to operate. As soon as a gear was engaged then the engine would restart. |

cutting out
I have a 2016 V60, has same issue (roundabouts and junctions) checked for recall, there is one but not my vin number. The recall description is as you describe, had mine serviced two weeks ago and discussed this, only to be told not my vin so no software update. Wonder if they will do the download when I'm smashed to pieces by a fifty ton artic on a roundabout where the car decided to stop.

Can it be turned off or is stop start a permanent feature ?
I have it on the works van but also a switch on the dashboard to turn it off. In 7 years and 142,000 miles its been turned ON twice, once to try it and the other by accident. Paul. |

Yes, the stop / start can be turned off and I think I’ll be doing that, at least to see if it remedies the cutting out. I’ll see how things go for now...
Thanks for the responses. |
